Well, that was annoying. I left it downloading the game today whilst I was at work. Came in and started it up to find it had only downloaded the Combat Tutorial. Going to have to leave it on all night to download the game proper on my lousy 2Mbit connection.
On the plus side, it does give me time to fix my X52 rudder potentiometer. Tried the combat without the rudder and whilst possible, I am hoping it will help me to target a bit quicker. Also need to note down what button number each button is... (But17 for next target; God knows which one that is (I know there's a diagram somewhere for the defaults)).
Ttaskmaster, watch the use of rails against Anacondas. Take note of the hull integrity at the point of explosion.

The more I read about this game the more i want to play it, only concern is that my machine might now be able to play it? :/
(Specs over there <---)
Also, anyone had any problems using keyboard and mouse? I have an old Saitek flight stick thing, so not sure how suitable that would be for this game...
This may help: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=24420
I'd personally suggest just assigning functions to wherever you see fit. It may take some tweaking, but if the controls are where *you* think they should be you'll remember them far easier.
Crimony flip!!!!!
Guess I'll be trialling some Rail Guns next time I find them...
Looking at how he has to fly to nail that ship, I'd probably want a second Viper specifically outfitted for 'Conda-Hunts.
As is, despite strafing down while steering up, the NPCs still out-turn me irrespective of whether I'm using Flight Assist or not.
I can generally take down most things now, right up to low-ranked Imperial Clippers, but sometimes I find myself wondering if my engines are even on!
Just using keyboard and mouse here, no issues at all. Your GTX260 is probably going to let you down, but I rest should be fine. I suspect you'd be limited to 720p (1368 x 768) and medium settings to get a reasonable framerate. although the GTX260 is listed as the minimum in the game specs, so should at least be playable.
Are you flying a Viper then? If so getting into a pitch and roll battle isn't going to be advisable against anything smaller than a Cobra. The Viper isn't about turning, it's about strafing runs. It's able to out distance itself from virtually anything because of acceleration and pace. Even a Cobra can out turn a Viper so you've got no chance trying against anything like an Eagle unless you put distance between you, turn around and then do damage on the way in. Boom and Zoom.
Bigger stuff you'll be able to out turn apart from the Elites, watch out for Clippers though they are surprisingly agile for a big en.
I plan on starting out with trading and bulletin board runs. I made a temporary fix for my rudder which I found to very useful for just normal flying around. I managed a quick hour before work this morning and did a quick trade run and went from 1000Cr to 1723Cr. It's a start... at least I didn't crash and burn!
My dad has been playing this on his pc
its nothing like high end - A10-5800K with a 6570 in CF
settings on medium/high and 1440x900 - good solid performance (surprising actually).
in game frame rate counter?
If you're new to Elite and still in the bog standard Sidewinder, going up against most of what's out there is like a rabbit taking a pop at a lion. It's not going to end prettily... You need to run some basic haulage and courier missions in order to upgrade the core systems of your ship. Once you're able to do that you're still not ready to fight - play the training scenarios to get a feel for combat where it doesn't cost you anything should you die. It's also a great way to learn how the various weapons work in practice, since the load out is usually different for each mission. Once you're able to hold your own, switch back to the main game and then choose your battles carefully. That way you'll stand a chance.
Actually, anything smaller than a Cobra tends to die before my FSD has even finished recharging!!
These are all NPCs, though, as my 0.5Mb 'BT Rural' connection kaks out too much for consistent online.
I prefer not to put distance between me and target as I seem to catch more hits when my back is turned. I catch a fair amount when I'm Boom & Zooming in as well, which is why I work on trying to get above/below and thus inside their turning circle. Presents a bigger target too, so more M-Cannon shots land.
Generally I use strafe and reverse in my turns, with sporadic use of FA Off and it does me pretty well against everything up to Python/Fed Dropship level. I still find it hard to gauge exactly what a target is doing, though.
They're usually the ones I have problems with - Those and Cobras just seem to pivot on the spot like a turret. Not sure how much of that is just cheating NPC AI, but it's a bloody pain in the afterburner!!
The Viper has incredibly strong shields for its size. Jink, bob and weave on the way in and out to make yourself a difficult target.

The ones that turn on the spot are generally using FA off and A rated thrusters. You've got no choice but to boom and zoom those. But, target the right subsystems and aim for the vents to cause them to overheat. You can take them out quickly if you hit the right spots.

My first proper weekend of playing after a bit of dabbling last week.
Half a million cr in the bank, can haul 100T of cargo in a run. It was a bit of a grind, but things are looking up.
Will have to go invest some of those credits soon in something pointy and bristling with weapons so I can try out some combat.
I also learnt that whilst space is big, being targetted on a station means if you are going to look over your shoulder to talk to the wife choose your timing else you might find the destination is eclipsed by a planet. Amazed that smacking into a planet (well doing an automatic emergency drop out of FS) only cost me 60cr in repairs
Loads of fun. Haven't completely filled my new 100T hold yet, so can't wait to get home and do another few trading loops.
