    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Wowsers that's one confusing game! Got 20 minutes in, set off from a dock without buying anything (couldn't see normal trade on the docked menu) but accepted a mission to hunt someone down. Used the jump system, very odd that I ended up flying around at super-speed rather than just putting in a destination and getting there (maybe I did something wrong?). Pulled up next to a space station and had to google to find out how to use the in-flight menus. Requested permission to dock, thought I'd paused it by going back to the menu (solo-play, maybe I just failed to press the right button) and came back to my ship having been destroyed by the station.

Back to square one, ah well :-)

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

You can't pause the game (despite them calling it a Pause Menu); a side effect of being online even in Solo Play.

Whenever you jump, you will come out by a sun and if you don't adjust your course or throttle down fairly quickly, you'll end up burning up!

For trade tips, use http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/ to get started. With only 1000cr to start with, it can be difficult to get started effectively. Once you have a little bit of spare cash (1000cr), replace the scanner with more Cargo Racks (via Outfitting at a station). That'll get you from 4t to 6t. I've only traded really, so some others may be able to help you if you want to start fighting first.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

One quick way to generate cash is to scan unknown sectors and sell the data to stations 20 clicks away. Can be time consuming but rather easy. Good way to learn the control as well.

I have now found a good run that generates me 200k per run between 4 stations. Saving my cash now for a Asp.

Seriously, they're not aiming it at the casual gamer are they?

Cheers for the help though, will try and find another half hour for a successful trading run soon.

Nope - You have to factor in mass, gravity and all sorts!
Elite has always been the thinking man's space sim, without taking it to über-nerd levels like certain others did!

I assume you've played the tutorials and read the manual?

I had been doing something similar, but having set route like the one suggested is helpful, at least when there are six systems that are a jump away from each other. I'll probably give Geras a miss, but after doing 39 Tauri and Fujin, I might return to 39 Tauri or use Elite Trading Tool to find other nearby systems where I can buy rares in order to find a route that lets me fill my Cobra before returning to Zaonce and starting again.

So far I have completed a one way trip from Zaonce to 39 Tauri and I made close to 600k, my aim is to reach 3 million cr so I can buy an A4 Frame Shift Drive and increase my jump range to 20Ly, then it should take less time building up some more CR for my next upgrade or maybe a new ship. Not decided yet, but I'm already on 1.3 million CR so not too long to go, maybe four or five one way trips.

How much start up cash do you need to buy the initial rares for the run?

Some of the rares can be quite cheap, the killer is that you have to travel 160ly minimum to make a good return on them. At first with a puny frame-shift drive that is pretty painful and had me constantly looking for somewhere to refuel.

These days I find it hard to fill my type-6 hold so I swapped 4T of cargo space for a big fuel scoop (so down from 100T to 96T) and a really big FSD so I can jump over 20LY with a half full hold. That way I can quickly jump half way, and then refill my fuel tanks at a star whilst waiting for the galaxy map to allow me to plot a course to the destination. To handle that in a ship that tends to overheat anyway, you need A rated power systems as well. The upgrades kind of trickled in, so I can't say how much you need to spend on a ship to really make the run easy.

Google for elite rare trade routes, and you should be able to find lists/spreadsheets of where to find rare goods including the initial cost.

TBH, I think you'd make more money faster by finding a decent trade run.

I'm currently averaging 1.2mil per hour on a single one-system jump.
I made enough to buy a Type-6, then upgraded the cargo racks and FSD, so I could ship 100T beyond 15LY, then just kept running the route until I could afford to buy 100T of cargo.

I made my initial credits from smuggling runs, which was really easy but oh so tedious.
