Ultimately, it doesn't matter as you can raise your rank with all of them as there doesn't appear to be any links between them. However, I would go for Empire up to the rank of Baron to get the Clipper; the Federation's Dropship is pretty poor and the Alliance doesn't have any ranks yet or benefits. Oh dear, there was lots of WoW that I never bothered trying to do because as a parent I just can't dedicate time to being in a group as at any moment I might get called away from the PC.
If the game goes to group tactics, then that is me out
Wonder how many people play Solo? I tend to.
Doesn't mean you have to play as a wing - just gives you the opportunity to should you wish to.
In other news, since 1.1 landed I'm struggling to make a decent crust as a bounty hunter. There's simply not the number of pirate vessels in the RES zones, and conflict areas are poor cash for even the big snakes. So, I headed for the nearest anarchy zone hoping to find some quarry there. Didn't find much, but I did find an outpost with a black market in said anarchy system. So, I boiled some NPC traders for giggles and pinched some cargo. Just about broke even, pah!
I'm determined to not have to resort to trading, but it's looking more and more likely as time goes on.
I'm running the game off an HDD over a 0.5Mbps line, so it tends to be a little smoother if I'm in Solo. However I do sometimes play Multi, just for the S&Gs or to see how good/bad a pilot I really am... So far I have no idea on the latter, as my flippin' targets keep F1-ing out on me!!
I always play online as a lot of us in my team speak group trade run together. I have heard of some people who play solo without shield generators or weapons to maximise trade runs and cargo space. Don't see why.????
Because against NPCs, the chances of interdiction are very low and even then you just boost away until your FSD charges and you're off again.
Live players are a bit more relentless and accurate, as well as more likely to interdict you in something like an Asp... which will melt your freighter in less time than it takes their FSD to cool down!
All I could find in a couple of hours in Yembo (metal rich ring supposedly) was 6 tons of silver and some minerals. Came to 51K cr in total, plus 15K for the NPC that attacked me when I got there. Was also interdicted on the way back to sell, that fight wasn't going too good so I bailed at no shields and 42% hull which in a mining Cobra cost 4.5K to repair. Take off another .5K for ammo and .5K for fuel.
I'm sure I have a lot to learn in technique, and the location for mining could be improved, but 30K/hr? That's going to have to come up a magnitude to keep my interest, even though I found it quite relaxing. Perhaps I should get back into the Asp and do a few trade runs so I can afford bigger shields & guns on the mining ship.
In the original Elite I ran for ages with mining lasers. ISTR they overheated fast, but had massive range so you could take down NPCs before they could fire on you Here it wasn't that useful in my combat firing group.

Asp is nice. I lose a little cargo space compared to the type-6, but it can defend itself and I was fed up with being "Harmless".
I tend to do rare trade route these days, so the hold isn't that full anyway. That way I keep the ship in explorer trim with huge fuel scoop and up-market scanners. I almost certainly make less money on the trade routes, but interdictions are fun rather than a running away chore.
Again, exploration doesn't seem to get you much money, but I find it easy to get carried away
In a Type 6, all you need is to find yourself one of the good Trade routes and upgrade your Cargo Racks to carry 100T.
You can then make enough money to buy an Asp within 6 hours of solid flying. Trade a bit longer to afford all the weapons/kit you want to put on it and there ya go.
I made 10 million over the weekend just gone, in between watching movies, baking some Melkterts and playing games with my dogs!
Yeah I know but sometimes it feels like a chore rather than a game! Plus with remastered homeworld coming up thats my weekend gone
