My 'Conda is running a 6A power plant. Not quite as much power as the 8D, but only 20T so helps with the jump range and fairly affordable. But then mine is a trade 'conda. I find in combat I spend half my time in reverse to try and get the target actually in front of me!
I was thinking more along the lines of once I'd A-rated and mil bulkheaded the Conda.

Know what you mean about the turn rate, but judicial use of pips and lateral boost makes a huge difference for getting it pointed in the right direction. I was using large turrets at first which whilst fun was getting me into more trouble with the 5-0 than I care for at High Res zones. Swapping to gimbals has meant I have less time on target, but the large beams/pulses tend to melt most things really quickly, especially once the shields drop and the multi cannons join in the party. I'm easily making as much cash/combat rank progress as with my FDL, and also enjoying the huge amounts of lateral drift when chucking her around. Even with FA on, the nose might be pointing one way but you certainly ain't flying that way haha!

'bout time we winged up again too, ain't seen you online for ages.

thing is that description makes it sound like your laser automagically knows if it's hitting a friend or not. I understand that the computer tech we're talking about is way ahead of "current" technology, but that's stretching even my willing suspension of disbelief. I'd prefer to see it manually toggled - much more believable and, frankly, FAR more amusing

It shouldn't be switching, but if your wing had preshared laser 'keys' (or sheild 'keys') then it could be that those harmonised laser/shield combinations result in power transfer rather than damage.. Of course, maybe the reverse should apply - if you can figure out an opponents shield key you could tune your laser to be especially effective, turning combat into hacking as much as dogfighting.

Sounds like an ideal job for the multi crew...

That said though, healing lasers instantly gives me the 'turbo face palm' feeling.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Bit more info leaked via Devs responses to the flaming they're getting on the Frontier forums:

I don't see how hard it is to imagine that in a universe where there are literal energy shields that can absorb and block all incoming energy by consuming from some other source of energy there couldn't be a directed beam from a third party that if tuned correctly (hence the need for a wing) could impart more energy to reconstruct said shield. It's not "healing" the ship, it's just recharging the shields in the same way a SCB can dump extra energy into a shield to recharge it. No shields and it's useless. Not in a wing, it's useless. Concentrating on aiming at a wing member, you're not able to attack anyone else. Get your fire groups confused, you've just attacked your wing mate.

It likely takes a long time, as well, so more drawbacks than anything else, especially the way I fly!

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Quick career update: Managed to get to an explorer ASP now, so I can finally do the stuff I wanted to do in Elite

Unfortunately had my first ship loss in it too - NPC insta-win interdiction, wing of 4 vipers and something powerful that took out my thrusters almost as soon as I had stopped spinning from the interdiction - went almost straight through 3A shields + boosters

But I am now getting really annoyed with the amount of Horizon's only stuff that isn't indicated as such - I've had to abandon missions because the next cargo in the chain was only available on a planet, and after chasing around loads of systems for the most recent CG I discover it's a resource only available to players with Horizons.. even though they are buying it from the same station I'm at. It's not just frustrating, it's immersion breaking that something appears at the same station for players with the expansion but not those on vanilla. Not to mention all the interesting story stuff that also requires horizons. Plus in 1.6 they're giving NPCs horizon's only weapons that we can't use ourselves!

Horizons is £25 now, if you're still into the game maybe now is a good time to jump in. The 2.1 engineer's update is currently in beta but will be released in a matter of weeks which will add some much needed polish to existing features and some new content. Also there's the multi-crew and other updates due later in the year.
