My brother(he is in game development) said playing the beta version with the new Oculus Rift was mind blowing, so it might be worth going for that, when it's available.

Oh, that bit. Sorry, mis-quoted the post.

As I understand it, it'll be admin-assigned. They'll put you in a 'prison' instance where yours doesn't overlap the main playerbase. But again, it'll be down to server logs. If you kill several trader pilots and take their cargo, that's legitimate. If you kill the same one or few players over and over in unusually quick succession, that's likely to be griefing and will at least spark an investigation to differentiate between consentual and non-consentual PvP - ie whether you and your mates are just hanging around killing each other for practice, or whether you're actually harassing someone on purpose. That's pretty much how some games do it now and how Star Citizen looked to be doing things, last time I checked.

Or were you asking about how the instancing itself works?

Nice. What size screen are you using?

I just had a mental picture of a darkened room with a decent armchair in the middle, stick on the right, throttle on the left and a table with wireless keyboard and mouse in front with a giant 120" screen and full surround sound setup for that total immersion experience,

    Tell us more.

Ok thanks, so it's something the devs will be manually investigating on a case by case basis, presumably to check terms of service breaches - will have to see what they are then.

    First launch - crash.

Secongf launch - 20 mins of watching a spinning orange ship. Ctrl alt del

3rd launch - 30 mins of watching spinning orange ship.

So far I feel like I've thrown £50 down the pan.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

I thought I would give it a go on keyboard and mouse playing solo and the first thing I managed to do was fly past the space station, turn and fly into the space station dock which I did with remarkable ease. I worked out that pressing keys 1 thru 4 allowed me to into various menu system but it took ages to figure out how to navigate the menus (see below for what I figured out, I really should RTFM) and on my first attempt I hit the tab trying to select the comms menu so I could get permission to dock. Hitting tab caused my ship to accelerate very quickly to an almost instant death! So I started a new game, repeated and having worked out the menu navigation, I got permission to land spent what seemed like ages getting to my landing pad but I did manage to land and have even bought myself some stock to trade, what I need to do now is take it somewhere so I can sell it, hopefully at a profit.

    In flight Menu navigation:
Use 1 to 4 to select the menu.
Q to move through the tabs
W+S to move up and down items under a tab
    Space to select
Escape to move back (I think)

For some very strange reason the navigation through menus when looking at the starport items is done using cursor keys and enter/return, not sure why they couldn't just do it so that all menus work the same way is beyond me. Hopefully when I get some more time I'll be able to go to my next planet and sell my items. I think I will avoid trying combat until I have my flight stick. But already getting very excited. lol

I have to say that lining up with the space station was so much easier on here than it was with the original Elite on the BBC Micro back in the 80's, but playing keyboard and mouse is not easy, there is just no precision in movement at all.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Ive been playing since it went £50. After dusting off my old X45 and getting a good profile for my Track IR, for me its been an incredible experience. There is little or no information to a new comer ingame, but the forums have many helpful posts and there are several tutorials on youtube.

Raised support ticket. This game isn't really beta though is it? Feels very, very alpha and i'm feeling conned.

I know beta, caveat emptor - i'm just feeling so let down so far. Much rougher at the edges than I'd hoped for once you start peeling away the veneer. And i've not even played yet. About to delete all local contecnt and reg entries and try a fresh install.

Its a game that requires time and unfortunately you seem to be having issues with the actual running of the game, I have thankfully been able to play it without issue and its a blast! I got my DK2 last month and Elite Dangerous is by far one of the best games for it, I believe I am in the spaceship so immersion factor is increased tenfold.

Buy an oculus rift, you will enjoy it more

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Fresh install helped a bit (less crashes, but still no getting past orange spinning ship load screen) So tried again, deleting all the folders to do with it on my profile too. Stuttered a it om first play but seems to have settled down. Working through combat mission training bit now and tweaking Thrustmaster settings as I go. Beginning to find my groove a little though flightstick still feels a bit odd - need responsiveness tweaking a bit i reckon.

No way will I be getting an Oculus Rift but one of those head motion tracker things does kind-of appeal.

Game is still a bit rough at the edges in a lot of areas, even at this basic stage. I'd advise others not to go for beta but to wait for final version - this is not really something ready for the primetime just yet IMO.

That's broadly speaking what's available to me. 110' 1080p screen, and a 5.2 surround system that's worth more than my car. Unfortunately the PC is in the room next door...

Little hint - once you fly through the letterbox, your compass changes to your assigned pad. Makes finding it far quicker!

    Tell us more.
It was a mate's house. Pretty much as you described, probably about a 80-100" screen if I had to estimate. It was 720p downscaled 1080p input, but still looked great (like 720p with 8x AA). Also 2 armchairs

As we were learning the game one of used the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X, while the other operated the keyboard for certain controls.
