I did see that and nearly bought it. There was the lure of already having the button mappings for the old one, and with the price at Argos that's quite the difference. Being close to getting a Corvette meant I wasn't in the mood for being patient

See what happens in another two years if my new Hotas X lasts as long as the old one.

I always just set these things up however I want them, or however it makes the most sense to me. Only time I use the default mappings in any game is when you can't change them. It's THE biggest reason I buy any particular peripheral, really... that and the pritty pritty lights, of course!!

I downloaded the original settings file, possibly from here. It has been heavily messed with since such that the button presses mean something to me.

I didn't notice until your post that it says the T16000M is hall effect, whereas I suspect when I open it up I will find old school potentiometers in the Hotas-X. That might have swung me had I seen it.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

I did exactly this as well. My Hotas-X was feeling a bit worse for wear, so I replaced it with a T16000M last year.

The 16000M is a nice stick with a lot of buttons compared to the Hotas-X, but the throttle is awful. There's no centre stop, which means you either have to configure a deadzone and estimate where the centre stop should be, or live with a full range throttle and hit a button when you want to reverse. It's also really stiff in comparison.

I've gotten used to the deadzone option now, but it's a major design flaw in my opinion. I think in hindsight I should've probably bought a new Hotas-X.

Some people mod their 16000M stick in various ways to improve this flaw, maybe I'll do that one day :-)

If it makes you any happier, the throttle on my new Hotas-X isn't as good as the old one. It is really floppy, exiting dock I have to hold the throttle in place or it will sometimes flop forwards sending me through the toast rack at full speed. That's fine in a small ship, bit hairy in a Conda/Corvette General flying is fairly on/off anyway so I don't notice it then.

I expect to pull the thing apart and work out how to stiffen it up a bit like the old one. Having the old stick to pull apart first so I don't damage the new one seems good

My CH kit is the same - For Elite, a Toggle Reverse button actually works very well if you're into reverse jousting, but especially once you start bimbling around in an SRV. It's like using reverse gear on your car!

Chieftain looks great. Tbh I've not played in a long time. The whole engineering thing really killed the fun for me and I've not really found the will to pick it up again. I still keep an eye out on the forums though.

Engineering killed it for me as well. Getting a VR headset kicked the game back off again for me though, and whilst I can't go playing solo in haz res and the worst combat zones like I used to I have been having fun again. Unlocking some basic engineering upgrades for an FSD boost on my ships wasn't that hard in the end, though getting the top level upgrades is more grind than I can face. Sounds like they will be doing something about that.

Doing a Hi-Res in a system with decent security seems to get me the level of dogfight fun I was missing from before. You are assisting police ships there, but it is easy to end up over extending so there is plenty of risk if you push.

I think my main change since pre engineering is that I run with bigger shields now on my trading ships.

How much is the Chieftain? Did some passenger runs in the Python over the weekend, the one where you pick up a load of passenger missions and then spend half an hour in supercruise getting to a station that is 1.8M ls from the beacon, then drop the passengers off for 50M to 100M credits. Yeah that sounds dull, but I had a book (Altered Carbon) I wanted to read and the credits are handy when new ships come along

Yeah VR has an good impact. Just before I packed it in I bought a Courier and basically had it set up as a joy riding machine. I've not got anything more than G2 DD's due to being unable to unlock Palin (ground missions with Sirius to death but never made allied so never got the previous engineer invite.) I might get back in to it - I think I need to get involved with more Wing stuff - I do miss having a laugh with mates. In Elite that's a whole lot more difficult...

Numbers on the Chieftain haven't been released, it's still in pre-beta hot build.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

I've done the same passsenger run a few times myself, well worth it to get the credit balance up :-)

I've not found engineering that bad. Most things can be found pretty easily with the help of forums and videos. Just this weekend I've unlocked Grade 5 dirty drives and Grade 5 efficient beams. The trick is to decide what you want and focus on that upgrade alone. Use the Inara site to import your journal, then it will show you automatically what you can get with the materials you have and what you still need. It is supposed to be getting easier with the Beyond update, we'll see!

The Chieftan is a nice looking ship, but it's gonna be a single role ship I think, due to the lack of internal compartments.
I own every ship in the game, but I think the 2 best ships of all time are the Python and the Anaconda. I don't think anything else they've released has come close.

I also went through a stage where I didn't play for a while, then the Thargoids arrived and I'm loving it again. I went mad with engineering to bring my Xeno Killer Anaconda up to spec and am having a lot of fun! I can now solo kill a Thargoid, but only when playing in VR. In 2D I find it much more difficult. VR makes such a difference in combat for me, it's just awesome!

So just how souped up do you need an Anaconda to be for that? Mine is a trade ship, too slow and delicate for fighting but a very nice jump range.

Is this a particularly well-known run from a specific location, or something?

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

It does need engineering, but not insanely :-)

    The key things are:
A Rate all the Core Internals, I went with Reactive Surface composite armour.
4 x Large AX Multi-Canons (fixed canons are better cos they do more damage, it's not too hard to hit a thargoid with fixed, cos they don't move too quickly).
In Utilities, a Shutdown Field Neutralizer and a Xeno Scanner, mix the remaining slots up with Shield Boosters and Point Defence.
For the Optional internals, I'd go with Bi-Weave Shield Generator, and fill up the remaining slots with Hull/module re-enforcements, and a couple of Shield Cells.
Also you'll want a Fighter bay.

    Engineering wise, I did this:
    Thrusters: Dirty Drives
    Shields: Reinforced
    Armour: Heavy Duty

You can do other things if you want like Heat Sink increased capacity and anything else to basically Hull Tank the ship. The Thargoid will take your shields down at some point in the encounter, so you have to be able to survive until they come back up.

The method is pretty much launch a fighter to distract the swarm, then shoot the Thargoid, each petal will go red one at a time, you have to take them all out one by one, then it will blow. They can get pretty angry!

    I made a video of a VR kill: https://youtu.be/Lax-GbzbsUU

Rusty Dog has some good videos on his channel for outfitting for Thargoid combat, that's where I got most of my knowledge from :-)

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

The Chieftain reminds me of the FAS in body shape, and obviously a different wing arrangement. It looks like it might be a bit better than the FAS due to the placement of the large hardpoints (top/central). I'd guess it'll be more than the FAS, but less than the FGS. Low 30million-ish.

I'd sell my FAS to get one if I hadn't have bought a paintjob for it - which, being a man of principle, means I have to keep it forever.

Yep. Load up with passengers in LP 876-26 (medium pads and no outfitting, take a python already fitted with economy bays).
Look for passengers wanting to go to LTT 9360. Relog over and over between open/private/solo to get more runs.
Do the flight to LTT 9360. It is something like a half hour from the beacon, so you can go do the washing up or read a book.

The hard part is that you have to do some missions first to get reputation up to get the passengers. It is quite a grind, but once there you can get 50 to 100M per run.
