I can't play FPS via a controller.
Ordered a new mechanical keyboard today to see what all the fuss is about too.
Will try WSAD, or a variation on that, see how I get on.

Hah
There is that.

Oh god yes I remember that.it was terrible.
I also remember that I used Z=left X=right /=down '=up #=fire on the bbc micro and had to constantly rebind on the spec'y from the other standard of O=left P=right Z=down A=up Space=fire because I found it hard to get used to up/down and right/left being on the wrong hands
On WASD vs QWES I think it's more of hand shape, on most people the middle finger is longer than the two on ether side of it so resting it on the W on the row above the index finger and ring finger is more comfortable.
However if you are someone with a sort middle finger then yes you may well find QWES where all 3 fingers are on the same row more comfortable.

QWES doesn't feel natural to me at all! Movement keys don't seem to be backwards compatible in my mind. The transition from arrow keys to WASD was strange initially but going back to play old games like Warcraft 3 feels strange and counter-productive using arrow keys. I use overlapping key binding software programs like AutoHotkey to force WASD in old games.
I'm shocked no one has mentioned ESDF! Think it was Tribes that I first came across it.
If I need more buttons in an fps (ARMA etc) I'll use ESDF. Shifts everything over one and you gain a fair few keys that are then reachable.
Used to use WQSE or EWDR (180° it: S or D are back, W/E forward) in wow, diablo and games that spammed the number keys.
Would you use the same fingers for QWES? I only use three fingers for WASD, but with your system, the thumb key on the S, It... it feels so right.
Another total war Q/E for camera, so WASD.
Never used to but will give it a go, might like it
WASD is my preferred option, but ill make sure to try out WSQE
WSAD for FPS games, Q button to spot and E to change weapon felt the most convenient setup for me.
I've tried rebinding my keys to other setups.
This is a very good post on the matter (WERD)
and Is another one based off WoW (ESDF).
They make a lot of sense and are very very valid but I just can't do it. I force myself for days and really struggle so end up going back to startard WASD.

WASD for me, I haven't tried using WSQE on my games so far.
