Re: WoW: WoD - New Expansion
If you can download the game at work (I think you need to use the launcher though) it should just be a case of copying everything onto an external drive, that's always worked in the past for me. They're changing the file storage format from mpq to casc with the expansion though so this may no longer work (but I see no reason it wouldn't)
I'm looking forward to having a play around and see what's changed when I get home. Got a month to get used to new mechanics before the expansion proper!
Re: WoW: WoD - New Expansion
That is interesting timing for me. Have been spending less and less time booted into Windows recently, don't really want WoW to drag me back.
Might have to try running the new patch in Wine under Linux, see if it works OK.
Re: WoW: WoD - New Expansion
I'm not sure about moving the patch data (seeing as they changed the patch file format now), But I've just had to finish patching on 3 separate machines. Ugh!
Re: WoW: WoD - New Expansion
Anyone know how large the patch is? I have about 3GB left on my allowance and internet is being installed tomorrow. Guess I could be patient and wait for one night! :D

I saw it saying "pre downloading 6GB" some days ago.
Re: WoW: WoD - New Expansion
Eeks, might as well wait until tomorrow then. :(
Re: WoW: WoD - New Expansion
Patch is BIG and will take some time to install. Also it's worth defragging after, or using the tool, unless it's on an SSD.
Personally I like the way they are going with the storyline and some of the new features. However, class wise is a completely different story. Some of the design decisions (apart from reigning in on cc) make you wonder whether they just can't be bothered any more. If and for once that's a big if I do play the expansion I'll be levelling as prot warrior for the first time in 8years. The dps specs as it stands are a mess and make absolutely no sense from a play-style perspective.

Certainly pre-patch it ran really well under Wine - although I usually boot Windows to play. Appdb suggests the patch runs just as well. If you don't mind the lack of shiny it still runs *far* better with the -opengl flag. If you do want all the shiny, the CSMT patches for wine apparently make a huge difference to DirectX performance, but I've not had a play around with CSMT.
The only thing that really annoyed me under Linux was having to manually update addons. I know the curse client is evil, but it's just so convenient and doesn't like Wine! You could boot Windows occasionally to batch update addons through Curse, I guess.

Oh I can live without the Curse client.
Now I just have to resist the temptation to but Elite: Dangerous, from a quick Google that seems to be resisting Wine still :(
Re: WoW: WoD - New Expansion
Upgraded to the latest client and checking out the new stuff going on. My biggest problem now is sticking with a single server to call "home".
I have multiple 90's across both factions on multiple servers (PvE and PvP), and it's a pain to switch between them all. I think I want to stick with Horde and PvE, but I have characters on Draenor, Chamber of Aspects, Sylvanas, Silvermoon and Ghostlands...
Most of my gold is on Draenor but it's a very Horde biased server, I would prefer to be on a more balanced server and maybe a little less "full". I think Magtheridon fits the bill.
It would be a shame to leave my 90's behind though, with only a month until WoD's release, I will probably only have time to get one or two characters up to 90 (can't afford transfers or boosts).
Anyone else in the same position? Anyone on Magtheridon? Anyone on a fitting server with a casual but progressing raiding guild I can call home?
Re: WoW: WoD - New Expansion
Shame you're horde scum, I think my guild fits the bill but it's Alliance. If anyone's after an alliance social raiding guild then I'm on Darkmoon Faire.
Re: WoW: WoD - New Expansion
Hmm, I have Horde and Alliance chars.
Will have to choose which ones I level first. MoP was Alliance, so should be Horde's turn I suppose.

This game is huge now ... I remember the vanilla game was half the size of that pre-download.
Re: WoW: WoD - New Expansion
After getting a few more 90's up to around 530 ilvl and still getting rejected for groups to SoO, I decided it was time to give up trying to get any further in the current expansion. So I rerolled to Bagnaj's server, Darkmoon Faire and joined his guild. They're a really friendly bunch, very helpful and making me feel quite at home. It's not a massive guild, but that's OK, as long as the attendance is high, which come release date for WoD I imagine it will be.
So far, I have a (or should that be another) Blood DK, currently level 73, working my way through NR. When I hit 90 in about a week I will buy a trip to SoO for the heirloom, switch to Unholy and spam Timeless Isle and LFR for gear to help push me through the expac, not forgetting the frogicide for upgrades. Once I hit 100 it will be back to Blood for tanking heroics and (hopefully) raids, and then working on heirlooms for healing and DPS alts.
Actually looking forward to WoD now, the more I read about it, the better it looks.
Re: WoW: WoD - New Expansion
Levelling is CRAZY fast now... Hit 90 on Sunday with less than 2 days /played (yes, it's a DK so only going from 55, but still that included a fair amount of AFK time). A few hours later and I'm sitting at over 510 ilvl running SoO LFR as a tank.
Gonna take it easy now and wait for WoD to land, then go for 100 on the DK as quickly as possible. After tanking a few LFR runs, I realised how much I missed it. It's what I did in vanilla, TBC and WotLK, so going back to tanking as much as I can.
Might even see if I can get another character up to 90 before WoD using purely LFD, something different to questing. Maybe a Priest. Always wanted to level a Priest.
How is everyone else getting on? I supposed this thread will get a little more lively once we're actually in WoD.
