Arma3.
Huge (!) play area, and whilst the combat is incredibly harsh (potential one shot kills from unsighted enemies etc) you don't actually have to play the missions and game aggressively. Simply load up the mission editor, perhaps give yourself a vehicle and explore and enjoy the sense of space.
Oh brilliant! Thanks so much for suggesting those games, indeed some very ambient and atmospheric environments to find out about. I'll have a whirl at all of them. nice one!
Like others have said, skyrim.
Proteus is very colourful but doesn't really serve a purpose otherwise.
If you don't mind 2d non-fps then fez is a really nice peaceful fun game.
Skyrim. I cannot recommend this enough. I never played the Elder Scrolls before Skyrim but somehow I have managed to put in more than 500 hours into this game. I would come home after work every day and need a game that is relaxing and immersive. Skyrim was the solution.
Portal2 (probably 1 as well, haven't played it yet). Puzzles are chilled out and some pretty funny dialogue
As others have mentioned - For non-combat and just atmospheric:
Dear Ester
Gone Home
The Stanley Parable
Combat involved but still atmospheric world to walk around:
Skyrim
Fallout 3
There is at least one more game that is screaming in my head to be mentioned but i can't think what it is right now![]()

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - without the Gold Tint but with many elements of FPS but more of an action RPG.
Blood Dragon.
Wolfenstein: The New Order.
Space Marine.

Hopefully Moneysoft does not can it or hopefully bring a good optimised port of all the Halo games to PC.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Gorgeous to look at and walk around. Even if you don't do any of the puzzles the scenery is amazing.
Sky Rim.. Elder Scrolls.. its stunning

Granted none of these games are FirstPesonShooters they are all first person adventure/story games
not a pc game but if you have a ps3, ps4 or vita then have a look at The Unfinished Swan also not first person but 3rd person but still so amazingly atmospheric, Journey
