I can't decide if I should lol or sigh a sympathetic sigh (I did both actually) but then the horror of the situation started to sink in. At least he had the foresight to take out Scansure.
I still feel kind of bad for the guy, I've been known to rage and take out a mobo with excessive force once, but having wrecked a mobo that cost me around £120 I have learnt that when I can feel that red mist approaching the best thing to do is make a cup of coffee which of course removes me from a place where I might damage my hardware. Ultimately, when inserting or removing components resistance usually means it is better to apply some logic and check what the cause is before attempting to apply more force, at least that's what I learnt. In my case that damage was caused by my refusal to do the job properly, I had a large GPU which needed the drive cage at the front of my case to be removed before I could fit it and the cage would go back after, I decided to take a short cut and the result was I ended up forcing the GPU down onto the mobo, missing the slot and ripping out one of the surface mounted components to the side of it. If I had gone for coffee then I might still have that mobo today!
I bet more of us have un-told stories of such incidents than we might care to admit.
What's the chance that Scansure will actually cover the damage? Surely they will cite a "wilful damage clause" and tell him to go away.
Scan sure should cover it, it is for damage during installation during the fist 28 days.
If they don't then scansure really won't be worth the paper it's written on!

@KeyboardDemon: I lol'd. I probably wouldn't have if scansure didn't save him. My first build went relatively smoothly but it took me too long to realise I had to plug in the cpu power to get it all to work.
@summoner: This is what scansure insurance is for accidental breaks, while installing stuff.

I found a more horrifying noob mistake but from years back.
I did my first ever build this year and, I swear, every little thing I did I thought this sort of thing was going to happen to me. >.< I really feel for the guy.
Pulling the CPU cooler clamps into place was the worst part - a lot of resistance and it made a sort of crunching/grinding noise that made me totally freak! I looked around the net and found that's fairly normal for my parts, but it still took me a good 10 minutes of tentatively faffing around with it to get it on. >.<
My next build will go smoother (I hope) >.<
ps. any new builders out there - if you've got a massive GPU and your motherboard's SATA data ports (or any other fiddly ports) are right by the PCI-E slot - plug the cables in and tuck them away somewhere first, before you put your GPU in. It'll save so much hassle later on...
I'm about to start my first build and I'm so worried about messing up that I think I would be too careful to get anywhere near this kind of damage. I think I'd more likely to think it was stuck in and leave it just because I didn't want to pull![]()
