What ARE the extra gun pods for on a FW190?

I dropped them cos, as you all pointed out, it was messing up my airflow

and the wing mounted additional canons are so powerfull, it scares me to pull the trigger.....so WHAT are the BIG OLD BOYS for? The ones that hand under the wings.

I am having trouble matching data from IL2 site to the planes actual flying characterisitcs. The engines all seem unbreakable, even with War Power on, but it confuses the life outta me.

Im sure its the A9 with extra inner wing guns....but the Website says its only Machine Guns all round..which is wierd cos I boomed a bomber in such a huge way the other day I was SURE they must be canons. It just detonated into a billion bits.

    Also, while we're on ARMAMENTS........the IL2 3M

How much stuff can that bitch carry? Mammoth guns with mammoth ammo reserves, Rockets under the wings AND bombs...but I cant say that the sighting is very easy...the Il2 has a see thorugh frisbee for a gun sight....whats THAT all about? Im crap anyway but that is just useless. Unless Im doing it wrong (again) . Anyone else an IL2 plane devotee?

I love ground battering sessions. TiGster and I had a full hour of taking outt AAA sites for a laff......and this thing is THE machine.

(However, out of the blue TiG became best mates with a MNig 3 with 2 SHVAC canons and cleared up )

The 190 underwing cannons are Mk103 30mm. (As opposed to the prop/airframe mounted Mk108

Although the Mk108 had a very high rate of fire for a 30mm cannon, the 103 was more powerful. Suffice to say you hit a target with a Mk103 round there is a fair chance that it will not survive, probably pound for pound the best weapon in the game.

This picture might give you a fair idea

Edit - patience my dear Triglet

A cannon round especially one as large as a 30mm is a devastating thing on an airframe. Whereas the machine guns require a high rate of impacts on a smal area to cause structural failure a handful of 30mm rounds could be sufficient to cause total catasrophic failure.

The ROF may be lower but as you need significantly less hits and don't require the tight bullet impact group to cause the damage it's far superior IMHO.

Not in all situations..Although for bomber busting yes its also a more difficult beast to bring to bear in snap shot situations. In high angle deflection shots (snap shots) give me the MGs anyday over a cannon

In real life high angle deflection shots were a waste of time for most pilots, you're average fighter pilot could muster 5 hits from a 2 second burst of 8 .303 Brownings. But you are right to some extent that's why you have a blend of MGs and caonon on many WWII vintage fighters even spitfires adopted this. It gives you a good balance of ROF and power.

But really you should always just go for the age old tactic of gettin on their tail and firing at point blank range or make slashing passes from above before swooping up again to gain heght for another attack

    Listen to him

Slashing passes ? hehe.....that will be Trig out of the window of an He111 while taking a leak

Seriously.....my gunnery skills are so low that I am simply looking for trhe best aircraft to HOSE the oppoasition with......like a mini gun in Q3

Then, as you scream past me in the first pass, if I get ya you die...if not, 3 -8 minutes later I die .

Its my new equation to life...forget Speed is Life.....or Altitude is your friend......

BIG GUN ON FIRST PASS........then run like a tart

I still find speed and angle are key factors in a kill, keep the angle minimal to avoid deflection and keep speed high and you'll be able to hit the enemy hard and be away within moments.

Absolutely, however in a Boom n' Zoom situation where you are relying on speed, you will find many of your attacks to be at extreme deflection, requiring you to be firing a burst well before the enemy has flashed across your sights, this is where the reqiurement to get in close is paramount.

Not that bad if you take my appraoch which is to fire at point blank range and then take extreme evasive action to avoid collision.
