    Re: The Witcher 3

    200 KB/s through gog downloader, :sarcastic-yey-smilie:

just a guess, but as hearts of Stone is a download aswell, there'll be another double digit GB download to do on Tuesday. may also be a day 1 patch for that too because of them having to send the expansion to steam/uplay/gog/sony/Microsoft to verify it for their systems. and they've found bugs in the last week.

so theres this 17GB galaxy/10GB gog download 1.10 patch, HoS multi GB expansion plus patch, unless they've rolled the HoS patch into this update. we'll see on Tuesday.
then theres the other expansion out mid next year.

great time to have slow internet and usage caps

hopefully they'll do another collectors GOTY type edition where its all on disc. the patches are getting to be just as big as the base game is.

    Re: The Witcher 3

I was getting 4MB/s this morning so they can be OK. Heart of stone is apparently a bit smaller than this patch.

But yes, capping is not a great idea in this day and age.

and this is a game i'd like to play again, after I've redone part 1 and 2 and actually manage to get an uncorrupted download.

going to play a more pro-human, boo-stupid-elves style this time, any choices to brutally murder the pointy eared squirrels i'll take.

as for getting the 1.1 patch installed.
I did have a 1.08.4 install + all DLC fully working, the 17GB patch got to about the 16GB mark and kept resetting back down to around the 12GB point, over and over and over. after 2 days trying that, I tried the gog downloader patch, which had also corrupted near the end. only found out once it had installed nearly all the patch and corrupted the install.

tried a re-install via the dvds I have (bought collectors edition) and that wouldn't install either for some reason.
so then tried the full 37GB install option through galaxy. which also keeps resetting the last 7 GB this time.

and here we are a week later without any witcher 3 installed whatsoever.

come to the conclusion that theres either an intermittent problem with some of my hardware preventing the large install, either memory or the hard drives going knackered. this is due to that lightning storm a month or so ago and/or my computer being from april 2009.
    windows 10 isn't fully compatible.
theres a problem on their servers preventing download - few other peple saying same problems I have on their forums.

going to go around mates house who has fibre internet and a win 7 install to get the files at some point.

lesson I have learned in all this
before doing a large patch on software, backup your current install so if the patch doesn't work, you just copy the original install back again.

    Re: The Witcher 3

I rushed through the 2 expansions. missed quite a bit.

did find an odd cave though

I'm waiting for the rumoured GOTY edition later this month and next patch. may/may not be enhanced version too. also theres the NVidia Ansel tech they need to patch in.

then i'll start the NG+ and take my time.

    _____________
as for my previous post in this thread. found out why it got corrupted:

DONT mix the galaxy download files with standalone gog download patches. use 1 method for the entire game.

289 hours gameplay. finished it twice. roughly 160 hours for a playthrough if you kinda rush bits.
not bad value for the £120ish collectors edition. didn't even have to send back the statue for a repaint, was one of the better ones.

cant wait to actually play the game in full ultra settings at proper HD res instead of 1680x1050. but that's for my next computer. something to look forward to at least.

    Re: The Witcher 3

Pre-ordered the GOTY edition for my PC and sold my (unplayed) PS4 copy last month.
Release date on the purchase page has since changed from 30th August to available on or before 31st December so no idea now of when I am getting it.

Is it that good? I wanted to test out my new PC build (http://forums.hexus.net/pc-hardware-...build-log.html) and ran this for about 40 mins in ultra-high settings.

My GTX 1080 didn't go beyond 75degC, and had a stable boost clock (in the 1,870Mhz range). However, the story-line didn't draw me in as much as say the roller-coaster start in the new Tomb Raider.

I suppose, the fact that all cut-scenes play in a small box rather than ultrawide (on my Predator X34 at 3440x1440) played a small part in this hmm. That said, once I finish Tomb Raider, I'll make a better effort and give this another go. I don't think judging it on just 40 mins of 'watching' cut-scenes is fair play.

    Re: The Witcher 3

    Is it that good?
its more of a journey experience across the 3 games for me.
carries on from where the books finish, and is a fanfic story of 'what would happen if geralt came back?'
story was enjoyable enough without reading any of the lore and backstory, funny amusing easter eggs are rife (like earlier screenshot) even has tinkerbell and the 3 little pigs. theres lots of norse/European mythology in-game. stories are based off those.

hard explaining without ruining the story too much. i'll give it a go anyway...

parallel multiverse. conjunction made portal, monsters came through, humans also arrived and took over from elves and dwarfs, humans made mutant humans to hunt monsters - 'witchers'. elves dwarves living in ghettos, decide to reclaim their world, big fights, wars and stuff. few hundred years later, not many monsters left that the humans cant handle, witchers are also relegated to ghetto status and despised. monsters come back a bit, everyone realises witchers are needed. geralt goes around hunting 'monsters' working for a pittance and being despised by everyone. general racism, nudey women, lots of strong language. child of elder blood, timey wimey portals and a Wild Hunt of spectral ghosts from another parallel world. (Its the name of the game!!!)
geralt gets stabbed a bit with a pitchfork and dies a bit. then awakes a few years later - then Witcher 1 starts.

as for 'hunting monsters'. the term monster doesn't just cover ghouls and demons.

there is way more to the story than that though. and gwent, lots of gwent.

you don't have to play the previous games, their story is covered by in-game books you can read. plus, due to design style, the main elf v human plotline from 1 and 2 is largely ignored in 3, the elves just disappear entirely, your choice about who to follow is entirely irrelevant.
there is a comic book (found in the extras on steam/gog) that explain what did happen. i've not read it yet, so not got a clue.
the programming and all the variables plus choices made in 1 and 2 if you imported the saves, got extremely complicated to do, so they just omitted the elves and did the comic book instead.

or you can just ignore the story and go whack stuff with your sword and burn things with your magic burny fingers, then get drunk and enjoy the dock life.
its not just a hack and slash though, there is blocking, dodging, rolling about, tactics, boss fights that can last 20 minutes or so. and some spooky scary emotional bits where I cried irl and got cold sweats.

pretty much all work has ceased on the game now. 1 or 2 more patches until the end of the year, then that's it, no more witcher, stories done and dusted.

so. in a nutshell. yeah its that good to warrant a few hundred hours gameplay. there are multiple ways to end the stories in the game ,27 or so in the main game. so multiple playthroughs await.

    Re: The Witcher 3

I think stevie summed it up pretty well the game is more of a experience driven exploration game its closer to Skyrim then anything else, it doesn't try to drag you in with a super story but instead lets you explore and find all the little side quests on a whim, its a awesome game but depends if you want a game that holds your hand or leaves you to your own devices.

    Re: The Witcher 3

I started playing this and its very good, deep RPG elements, interesting side quests, quite nice graphics, etc but people seem to keep making this out as the best RPG ever, except it seems rather sterile to me. Geralt is OKish as a character, but don't really relate to him(I couldn't finish the first Witcher due to this) and I am not getting anywhere near the same buzz as playing through the Mass Effect series especially with the characters in that, and TBH I prefer Fallout:New Vegas over this still despite it being technically inferior on almost every level.

I suppose you can't please everybody!

    Re: The Witcher 3

Hm, ran into the same problem with TW1: Geralt seems a mostly unsympathetic character.
Still, the 'unnamed hero' in Gothic is similar, and I really enjoyed Gothic 1 and Gothic 2. Gothic 3 onwards were so poor that I never completed it. Similar with Risen (same dev after they lost the rights to Gothic).
Having a fixed person can seriously misfire if the character is unsympathetic. Plus, if like in TW and Gothic you only offer people a male character some female players won't play it (at least Mass Effect gives you a choice).
I'd rather play totally open-world like in TES or Fallout - just wish Bethesda would spend more time polishing the NPCs and towns (Gothic 2 only had one town but it was probably the most realistic one I ever encountered in an RPG). Novigrad in TW3 looks quite detailed too from the videos.
Having said that, Thief's Garrett was also unsympathetic but I still enjoyed the first two so it is not clear-cut.

    Re: The Witcher 3

Don't forget Geralt is meant to be that way, as a Witcher.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
