Xbox pads are recommended and generally the most popular. I tend to always use my xbox one pad on the PC at the moment :)
Either xbox 360 or even the new xbox one controllers can be used now with a microUSB cable or the Xbox adaptor for windows 10.
The BEST option is the XBox One Elite controller... I have held one and, despite hating controllers, this thing is admittedly flippin' AWESOME!!!
However, it's also awesomely expensive and so (thanks to how some games work) I too am going with a Genuine Microsoft™ wired XBox™ 360™ controller as the cheapest of the most realiable options!
IIRC the 360 pad need to be wired or use the PC wireless receiver to work, the play and charge cable for the 360 pad is for power only.
I would just get a normal xbox one controller. I have one and its awesome also the elite if over a hundred quid which is insane.

Hmm Xbox One controller nearly twice the price of the 360!

It is alot more precise and feels like its much better built. It also has a detachable micro usb cable so it can be used wirelessly if you choose to buy the receiver later.
There is always the Steam Controller that could be worth consideration, although I would put my backing towards the wired 360 controller. Cheap, robust, reasonably comfortable and functional.
official xbox 360 controller for windows... 20 quid delivered form ebay.
Just buy one.
Does one need ultra-fine precision while just playing "a bit of Rocket League", though?
I would concur if the OP was quite seriously into several games that required a Pad... or even just an insane fanboy of one particular game (given that I was the one dropping over £150 just on peripherals for Freelancer)... but for casual-ish use, I would advise taking the cheaper, solid option... at least to start with, anyway.
If and when you find the need for something better, THEN you start phoning up your bank manager and explaining why you need the loan!!
I would also say the 360 pad, I have the wireless one, fairly cheap, reliable and works in pretty much all games.
I got a wired 360 controller, (I now have 2) the other day from the High street for £25 (BNIB)... better than waiting for the post, for little extra over the ebay kind of prices. Also, easy to return if still in warranty.
Great controller works with all the games i've tried that i would need a controller for.
+1, use mine with rechargeable Energizer 2450mAh AA batteries, never timed how long they last but they last long enough not for me to notice frequency of recharging. Only thing that's happened in the pretty lengthy time I've had the 360 pad was the receiver just died magically one day. Taking it apart revealed a loose connection, after fix done never had an issue with it.
Thanks everyone. Think I'll pick up a wired 360 controller.
Never had any issue with the 360 controller and the bonus of it working so easily on Windows is that you can take it round to your mates and join in with him on whatever very easily.
Xbox one wireless controller £31.47

Get it, it is worth the extra £6.47
(You may need a couple of metres "usb - microusb converter" lead)

360 wired pad all the way
Having recently switched from an old 360 controller to both the Steam Controller and the Xbox One controller, although it will be more expensive and may require an upgrade to Windows 10, the Xbox One controller and wireless receiver is a fantastic combo.
I'm running an xbox one controller in win 7. (wired) that's fine. When you plug them in you can go to windows update and there will be an option there to install the drivers for the controllers. Don't need win 10.
There's not that much difference between the xbox one pad and the wired 360 pad in terms of usage and layout. So saving a little money and getting the 360 pad is probably the best option.

Best of all worlds. £24.99. Xbox one wired.
I like the Steam controller. It took me a while to get used to it, I have an Xbox One. Now that I am, I prefer it to the XB1 controller. I find myself much more accurate with it.
I used to use a Logitech wireless gamepad but ddn't find it ergonomic. I replaced it with a Thrustmaster game pad which broke sometime after. I currently use a PS3 game pad paired with the free software MotionInJoy which works quite well and pairs over bluetooth quickly and easily. Given the choice I would recommend the 360 gamepad too just because I think its the most comfortable, however to pair the wireless one with PC you need to buy a receiver, and I've heard it can be difficult to pair with.
I recently bought the XEOX Pro Analog Gamepad - Wireless after reading a lot of reviews and I like it. It has both Xinput and DirectInput which appealed to me in case I play older games.
I bought it for £17.99 but it seems to have gone up in price since then.
Bought the 360 wired controller and all good except for a squeaky right trigger.
Xbox pads with USB ports are one of the best around. However, it is worth bearing in mind that you do lose functionality if you play PC games with a gamepad instead of a mouse + keyboard!
