Diving back into PC Gaming, and it has been almost 18 years since.

    Hi all,

Well, for the past 18 years, in the early days my gaming was limited to console gaming - it was only prior to that during my teens that I gamed on PCs.

With my upcoming PC build, I am now looking to jump back in - I'll be dual-booting Windows 10 and various Linux flavours (namely Ubuntu/Archlinux etc).

I enjoy RTS the most and miss the good old days of C&C, StarCraft (original), Total Annihilation, to Commandos: Behind Enemy lines.

Actually talking about Commandos - I recall how thrilling it was to use the green beret to slit someones throat, and it was as satisfying as doing the same in MGSV! But I digress...

One thing I'm hating about modern games is the whole DLC aspect and the 'in-games' purchases malarky. I like to pay the sticker price and that's it.

So... are their any current RTS games that you would recommend based on:

    1. What am I waiting for, must play them NOW..
    2. Minimum DLC/In game upgrade nonsense.

Steam and OpenGL/Linux supporting games preferable. Then again, Windows titles are fine too (Steam).

Oh on the PS4 I play titles like MGSV (played all of 'em, even on the Gamecube) and Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition etc. Been ages since I played, but oh I so must get back to 'em...soon!! I'm also a huge fan of the Resident Evil franchise, played every PS-related release.

    Thanks again!

    Cheers M.

Dawn of War 1 & 2 are well worth getting if you like RTS.

Starcraft 2 is really good and plays similar to DoW, Blizzard also have Warcraft 3 available.

Homeworld 1 & 2 have been remastered and are available on Steam & GOG

Ashes of the Singularity is the newest one I can think of but haven't bought it as of yet.

One thing missing off Ferrals list,

Supreme Commander !!!!, Probably the best RTS in the last few years by far, you want the expansion forged alliance, ignore the second game completely as its crap lol.

Other great current RTS games (though very different styles to those that you mention) would include the Total War series (I would go for Shogun II over Rome II but it's personal preference) and Paradox games including Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings (IMO the former is easier to get into).

I actually used to play Homeworld 1 rather extensively as a kid, would be great to check out the 'remastered' version!

Thanks for the great tips. Couple that seem to be rather interesting:

    * Warhammer: Dawn of War II // not out yet

    * Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak // this I will get along with the remastered Homeworld pack:

    * Ashes of the Singularity // most recent it seems?
    http://store.steampowered.com/app/228880/

    * Company of Heroes 2: Master Collection
    http://store.steampowered.com/app/365820/

    * Blitzkreig 3 (Steam) // all about tanks and WWII, only preview out.

    * Shogun II: Fall of the Samurai // Thanks to Jim, my cup of tea!
    http://store.steampowered.com/app/201271/

    * Supreme Commander II // has mechs, yay!! (Thanks to CAT^5th/Jasp)
    http://store.steampowered.com/app/40100/

    * Planetary Annihilation: TITANS // seems to be good but comments show it has the usual DLC upgrade hell.

    * Battlefleet Gothic: Armada

It's a real shame that game demos seem to have gone the way of the Dodo, although I belive steam allows two hours of game play and you can get a refund. Also worth checking out sites like green man gaming for deals.
Game wise I am currently playing warhammer total war, really enjoying it, plays fine without any DLC, although they are milking the opportunity to sell new races.

Ooh thanks Flibb, didn't realise that was a refund policy - good thing given how pricey these things are (and the general lack of quality!)

That's Dawn of War 3 mate, due out whenever.

    You want DoW 2 :

    http://store.steampowered.com/app/15620/

Don't forget you also have re released on Steam :

    Rise of Nations
    Age of Mythology
    Age of Empires Trilogy

Also check out GOG if you want to play some of the older titles from DOS era, found that GOG versions tend to work a bit better if you want pre 2000

    https://www.gog.com/games/strategy?s...selling&page=1

Instant Gaming are really good for a lot of newer stuff :

And now for a slightly unusual suggestion - Creeper World 3: Arc Eternal http://store.steampowered.com/app/280220/
It's kind of a hybrid RTS/Tower Defence, ridiculously addictive, has a Linux port and drops to dirt cheap in Steam sales.

Supreme Commander 2 is more casual. The real players still play the original and it's expansion:

    Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance

You can still find a vibrant multiplayer community using the community built player lobby called Forged Alliance Forever (or FAF as it's generally referred too in the community). Check out Gyle on YouTube for some game replays with commentary.

BTW Nice to see you back mike, hope you're well.

BTW Nice to see you back mike, hope you're well.

If you enjoyed Command & Conquer games then you might want to check out Grey Goo... same folks that started the C&C franchise created it.

My favourite Total War game was Empire... sunk hundred of hours into it, then moved onto Shogun 2 to do the same.

    Enjoy your gaming
