Xbox One controller and steam
Hi All,
I had a few mins today to have a quick go on some steam games and had an Xbox One wireless controller lying about. I paired it with my PC (well iMac, but it's running Windows using Bootcamp), and it's detected by the OS fine. In the settings, I can see that the OS is detecting button presses etc, but when I fire up steam it just doesn't work.
In Controller Settings I get 'No Controllers Detected'.
What am I missing? Surely this should be simple?

Well on Windows you do need a USB receiver for the controllers even though they are Bluetooth.

Another thing you could try is connecting the USB lead to the controller and plugging it into the machine to see if it works like a wired controller
Re: Xbox One controller and steam
Eh? So even it's detected properly by the OS and is working 100% according to the diagnostics, steam can't recognise it without a USB receiver? That's bonkers!
Re: Xbox One controller and steam
I don't think it's a Steam thing in all honesty, I think it's a Microsoft thing making sure you buy their adapter so it is recognised as it should be!

Specifically :
"Note Wireless connection requires Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows"
There is also a troubleshooting guide which may be of use :

I use a wired Rock Candy XB1 controller on my PC and have the 360 wireless adapter connected to my Steam Link
Re: Xbox One controller and steam
Weirdly it seems to be picked up fine by MAME - I've just fired up a game of Rastan (yes I am that old) and it worked first time, perfectly with no problems. I can't believe it would specifically be crippled not to work with Steam, so I guess I must be missing someting....
Re: Xbox One controller and steam
I should point out that I am using Bluetooth if that makes a difference....
Re: Xbox One controller and steam
Don't buy the dongle, I'd be like 90%+ there's a relatively easy way around this that would require some googling and fiddling with .inf files and so on
Re: Xbox One controller and steam
I'm that old myself, to my right my Commodore 128, Amiga 1200, Atari ST & Dreamcast are set up, other side of the room there is my N64, Gamecube, Megadrive, PS2 , PS4 & Wii U and in a small cubby hole I have the Amstrad CPC setup, then in a spare room BBC Model B!!
Just a thought, has the controller itself been updated to the latest firmware?
Re: Xbox One controller and steam
Further testing (with a couple of Steam games has turned up that it appears that some of the buttons do some of the actions (although not necessarily the right ones). This is why there's a market for console gaming!

Commodore 128? My first computer was a VIC-20. Proper retro! I was about 4. I'd love to have that kind of setup if I had the space!
How do you update the controller firmware?
Re: Xbox One controller and steam
I have only had the C128 around 3 month now, prior to that my 1985 C64 was setup which I still have the receipt for! We did get a Spectrum 48k initially but after spending the afternoon trying to get it to load my mum took it back and got the C64 instead. My first machine was a Commodore 16 which I loved, mum bought me it after I came in from school raving about Granny's Garden on the BBC which I had played at school.
I'm assuming you are using Windows 10 via Bootcamp.
To update the controller you need to get the XBox app, connect the controller via USB and go from there, here's the Microsoft official guide to updating :

You need to make sure that the games you are playing fully support gamepad, usually if it says partial support it usually means menus on title screen you have to use keyboard & mouse but game control itself is fine.
Games that are great with pad I have found are Borderlands trilogy (first one you have to change a few lines in the ini to show controller mapping), Dishonored works great with a controller, Doom works well. Theres loads of games now with controller support. I have been using a controller myself for a few year now due to to long using KB&M and I get bad pain in arms and wrists (getting old) and I want to be able to sit back and relax while enjoying games.
