    Lady Pilots of the VVS

I've been trying, for some time to discover as much as I can about "The Night Witches". I thought that was the desciption of all lady VVS, but I'm wrong.

These ladies, defending their mother Russia, flew sorties in very very old planes, often over the German front lines, in Polikarpov P02's which were not quick. About 80 mph to be accurate.

But from what I've read they used to cut the engines and glide over the lines, in silence and then drop the bombs by hand for total accuracy.

The sleep deprivation in the German lines because of this permant night attack could well have been part of the German downfall.

Some of the pilots became fighter pilots, but were all wearing mens overalls, which were inevitably huge, so the pictures I've found are a bit scary and a bit humerous in one

The female fighter pilots existed too....inentire squadrons

Yak 1's and Yak7's were fought in, and PE2's were used as dive bombers. Without sounding chauvenistic, cos it's not my way, the navigator used to have to help the pilot pull back on the stick when thesebombers were fuly loaded.

If any one ever comes across good Female VVS web sites, can you link them here for me.

It intrigues me, (as you'd expect living with one ), that these ladies flew an air war in Russia, when other countries were not creating female pilots.

This is a taster for what I like to read

    Thanks for any help

and The White Lilly, who I only heard about because of a model plane
    http://www.fortunecity.com/meltingpo...r/yak-1_48.htm

and there are books aplenty, but I have so many book as yet unread, in boxes, that I must resist.

the thing is, the subject is clearly of interest to so many, as it seems that Russia was so "equal" in war.

Well according to Dak's first link all the groundcrew, mechanics, bomb fitters etc for the female pilot regiments were also women.

Searchlights, however, were another story. The Germans at Stalingrad developed what the Russians called a "flak circus". They would bring out the flak guns that had been hidden during the day, and lay them in concentric circles around probable targets, and the same with the searchlights. Po-2s crossing the perimeter in pairs in the straight line flight path typical of untrained but determined Russian flyers were usually ripped to pieces by the Flak 37 guns. The 588th, however, developed another tactic. They flew in formations of three. Two would go in first, attract the attention of the searchlights, and when all of them pointed to them in the sky, separate suddenly in opposite directions and maneuver wildly to try to shake them off. The German searchlight operators would follow them, while the third bomber who was farther back snuck in through the darkened path made by her 2 comrades and hit the target unopposed. She would then get out, rejoin with the other two, and they would switch places until all three had delivered their payloads. It took nerves of steel to be a decoy and willingly attract enemy fire, but as Nadya Popova said: "It worked."
these planes top speed was below 109 stalling speeds, so keeing a spot light on them would have been a nightmare. these things TURN

It must have been damn hardwork to keep up that kind of manoeuvring for any length of time, not to mention dangerous.

I can only imagine the adrenaline, the sheer effort and the mental stress levels.

Russians seem to be good at that stuff though. Mentally and physicly tough.
