i guess you get caught up in an online world...I stick to UT/UT2004. frag fest and everyone expects to get blasted once in a while. its just part of he game. this eve thing - you spend ages building and collecting your fortune then some *rse comes and blows you up just because he can. these people are in all walks of life - no reason for it, they just do it cause they don't care. the article in question seems different to me cause this guy's doing what he knows is right to start off then he gets mad and sees how much he can take out of the system - regardless of the innocents he takes out on the way. its ammusing how easily it could be done too!

People are always pulling scams in EVE.. unfortunately for some, the developers have decided that this is just part of the game (comes under the role play part apparently, and as it is an RPG...) as the game is based upon you either becoming a 'good guy' or a 'bad guy'.. if someone REALLY gets you, you can put a bounty on their head, and if it is rewarding enough, they will have a miserable EVE life for a while.

The corp I am in had someone quit the game and give their account to one of their friends, who then found it amusing to completely empty the corp of everything they had, items, ships, BP's, ISK, the lot.

You also used to get trade scams, some of the pictures of the ships look very similar, but the value of the ship can be millions in difference, you can also rename ships.. so someone buys a cheapy cheap frigate for say 300,000ISK, renames it to a hauler that costs 30,000,000ISK = very profitable scam.

Other 'scams' which are really nothing more thank ganking are corps that promise you a ship worth > 100mISK upon joining, ask you for the money for it within days, when you can't cough up they destroy you.

Ore theft is also rife in some areas - you'll be there, grinding away filling a can full of ore, then along comes a hauler, slowly passes you and empties your can, stealing all the ore for themselves and you are powerless to do anything about it... open fire and you get done by the police.

And possibly the most irritating scam of all time, which has actually been banned by CCP, is to create a charachter with a very similar name to that of the NPC pirates, sit next to a gate, lock on to you and wait for you to fire and get done by the police.

But this adds to the diversity of the game and can actually make it more interesting at times.

Thats the thing - you can't. Or couldn't when i was playing. You could only place bounties on people with a negative security rating - but that guy had a positive rating (he only killed members of the corp he joined and that does not affect your rating). I tried but there was no way to put a bounty on him.

The problem is that while developers say "its a RPG and anything goes", but its still limited, and sometimes people on the other side can do things that you have no way to counter. It would've been sort of ok if he killed me once and let me play my game then - but he made my life hell - the only way i knew to play the game (trading) was impossible. And when i tried to change and adapt i was slapped in the face by lag.

Also in real life you may get scammed - but you would have a contract and you would sue the person who scammed you. He might go on the run, but at least police will be after him. When the game limits your options to ensure the security of a contract then you can say that its failing to be a simulation of life that its claiming to be.

No they won't. They'll build up their bounty, but a shuttle and get podded by their friend who'll collect the bounty and then split the reward. Only time that doesn't happen is if the pirate has implants, which would be a stupid choice for a pirate's life if you ask me...

That's why I never mine alone. Either use a 2nd account with a hauler (mine into can straight into hauler) or get a known friend to help.

Why did the corp leader not do anything about him?

Corp was US based iirc, so they were on at slightly different time. Also at the time it was a bit of a quite period for the corp and i dont think we saw the leader on for a while. I was thinking of quitting the corp, but i thought i could take him on. He only had a frigate so i thought i'd take him with my Thorax. I did alright in first battle but couldn't pin him down for the deciding blow. So i went to nextdoor system to get a jammer and he attacked me again in transit. As i said - lag finished me off.

After that i didn't really care about Eve any more. Developers didn't want to compensate my lag slaughtered cruiser. So i gave up. It was more aggravation than fun.

Should have just left the corp until he was dealt with.

Just finished reading the whole thing through - that is a perfect example of a care bear.

He went into <0.4 and is surprised he was attacked?!

COME ON.. Piracy is permitted in those regions, and he was flying a hauler with 35mill of goods - what the hell did he expect?

One of my mates is exactly the same, he says "EVE Player Pirates are the absolute scum of the Earth.. what gives them the right to stop me mining in 0.0?"

"Umm.. what gives you the right to demand the ability to mine there? If they want to take control of an area and kill all who trespass, there is nothing to stop them, except maybe a stronger army... it's the game, deal with it."

"I don't care, they are still scum"

BTW, you don't need to talk down to me about EVE, been playing since ~march last year.

dk, sorry to hear your eve experience was like that. Me i just love it, cant get enough.............. As for the scammer, nice story, I can remember being in the same boat with all the mining, but i chose the honest route. I used to go to newb systems with a hauler and by ore from newb's at slightly less then what they could sell it for instation. Worked great, and they were happy, ended up recruiting a load into my corp!

Wasn't trying to, sorry if it seemed that way. In any case some readers may not have played it. Plus i don't know what changed since i played it a year ago. Maybe now you can set bounties on whoever you want, which is why i elaborated a bit more.

To summarise - i can see "evil" players as an integral part of the game. And i am not saying I handled it in the best way. But there are things which are wrong with that game, lack of control in certain aspects. And those things put me off it. I think lag was a big factor too, at the time they kept hitting records of users online, but the server didn't seem like it was coping too well. And getting some cash back for it was tempting.

Nimbu - I may be wrong but did we meet in EVE by any chance, your name seems familiar? I started playing last february and stopped in may. You think our paths could have crossed?

Possibly, around that time I was CA, in a corp called Backwater, and was working outta F-E Space, but NAST had come in and had waged war on F-E so we were pushed out. I then moved back to my own corp J.I.T Enterprises, and we had regrouped in a empire system Umokka, very close to a Caladari starter system, (Todaki). Either that or u caught me bumming around the Vittenyn system, kinda my spiritual home. (Me and corp mate spent months mining together there for out BS's.)

    Any of that sound familiar?

None of that sounds familiar. Although - vittenyn... Yes! I was initially around Gallente starting area near Renyn and Alenia and Vittenyn was where i had to go to get some ore for a mission. Then i stayed there for a while mining plag - i guess thats where our paths crossed. The world is a small place. Oh, and before we get overly excited - ur ingame was nimbu wasn't it? Fancy meeting you here a year later

Then I moved to whatsit somewhere - Algogille i believe(Verge Vender and Essence regions were my general areas).
