Certainly a bonus for buyers of Vega cards. I might hold on for Navi 10 personally, fingers crossed it's coming in July.
So they've achieved in software ray tracing that actually looks decent (sorry but the BFV stuff just looked meh to me) and doesn't only run on any hardware but also runs smoothly on a relatively mid range card? Thus utterly destroying the need for Nvidia's high end £1000+ cards? Granted it might be different once you've got lots of characters in there and so on but that was on a Vega56 and it was silky smooth. I wonder what the resolution was....
I know I've got a vested interest in this as I'm on a Vega64 (bought because of Nvidia's business practices) but I was never really that excited about ray tracing.
Honestly is this G-Sync and Freesync all over again? Are Nvidia going to say "oh yeh, you can do this is software, here's our "new" software based RTX"? Bear in mind that on laptops Nvidia did G-Sync in software for years and kept it quiet, insisting desktop users needed to shell out for expensive hardware....
There was a great article about this at Digital Foundry a while back - tensor is accelerating one part of the ray tracing pipeline, but the developer said modern GPUs can do fine if they have enough memory bandwidth, so upcoming consoles and vega-style GPUs can do it fine.
assuming the video is legit, then its' looking beautiful AND it's on a Vega 56, not even a top card.
but lets await fact....
meantime... I think RTX is going to find it's life outside gaming in 3d rendering - totally unsurprising really.

and it will kill the performance... where the Crytek / AMD blend seems to be quite efficient :)
the entire nVidia plan seems a tad confused. Which is a shame as the fundamentals of their previous ranges have genuinely and effectively pushed the boundaries of the graphics tech offering for us all.
They've not given up at all. They're just opening up a completely free standard, which Microsoft have developed, called DXR. The DXR standard can be utilised by any DX12 cards, but the RTX range of cards have dedicated cores which process DXR information.
We shall see what comes of it, but I'm not worried, in the slightest, about my RTX 2080Ti purchase. Nor the RTX 2070 I bought for my girlfriend.
Also, now that we know they're opening this up to GTX 10 and GTX 16 series cards, this makes the RTX-OPS comparison between the RTX 2080Ti, RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 and the GTX 1080Ti and GTX 1080 much more meaningful, where people complained that the RTX-OPS were being compared against cards that were never built with RTX-OPS in mind.

EDIT: Having now watched the video, he says exactly what I said in my reply. Did you even watch the video or just find it and run to tell people that RTX is a flop? The internet seems to be full of people who cannot wait to see RTX fail.

I'll just quietly remind everyone of the difference between the "tech demo" videos Nvidia put out there and the first real world raytracing we got. With respect, it's much simpler to get mesh raytracing of reflections running with a specific scene in a specific scenario in one tech demo, than to have it running at high performance in a real gaming setup. I'm curious if they can also handle lighiting & shadows with the same technique too.
If AMD can do this without special hardware then that genuinely is a good thing, but no need to go crapping all over Nvidia on the basis of one rather short video that doesn't even show us a comparison between on and off - really hard to tell from that video what is actually being raytraced, even if it does look good....
Proof will be in the first game to actually use it.
As an aside - those who think raytracing in BFV is a bit rubbish...try it with everything on ultra in firestorm - it looks stunning, especially with the latest patch where they upped the ray count again. There is a lot of water/ice on that map and when the firestorm is advancing towards you its both terrifying and beautiful at the same time ;)
