Think I am going to have to put a few extra hours in at work for a bit extra cash and invest in a higher spec graphics card, yeah it looks nice and plays pretty well on my Rad 9600 Pro but occasionally when theres a big explosion the game can get quite choppy and sticks occasionally. Doesnt overly ruin the fun but found it can make things difficult when it decides to go choppy when I am aiming a torp at an unsuspecting vessel.

I did too, but turning off hardware acceleration for my sound-card in DxDiag solved the problem

I stalked the crap out of two Dutch Armed Trawlers yesterday as there was naff all else about, they headed through dover where I soon found myself with a tough choice..

A convoy of Merchants, or the Revenge Battleship fleet* and it's escorts.

I hit the battleship with two torps, one in bow, one just aft of midship. She limped, but did not sink. I then had multiple destroyers coming after me so I had to play hide and seek for the next 15 (!!) virtual hours.

I got away though, travelling at a whopping 1knots due to battery having roughly 2% left :/ So stopped, waited for darkness and for Destroyers to move off so I could surface and high tail it.

*I never bothered to check which ship it was, but it was the Battleship that had all the guns infront of the command tower

That'll be a Nelson class battleship - HMS Rodney, one of the gang that sunk the Bismark

    Awesome

    rgr, that's the one.

Knew it was one of the ones that went for the Bizmark but couldn't remember which class it was called.

I filled my seat when I saw it though. :/

btw, on a thinly related note whilst searching for pics, I found this site:

    http://www.ausbg.org/battle_fleet.html

How fricking cool would that be? They actually fire and sink each other

Getting seriously annoyed with this now. More than 50% of the torps I'm launching are just bouncing off the hulls, meaning I don't have enough torps to destroy the boats in the training mission. For the exam, I actually surfaced and blasted the hell out of the armed convoy, immobilising one made it easier to finish it off, then managed to get the other before I sunk. Crew repaired most of the damage and I continued to use the deck gun to sink all the ships getting an Excellent result in the process! I haven't had more then 1 sinking so far using torps? And yes, they are switched to magnetic, they already where.

So, I did my first missions. Cruised all the way to a certain area and patrolled for 24hrs, no enemy ships sighted so I came home. Plotted the course, told the navigator to follow the course and set it on 1024x, got bored and went to get a drink as I finished my home stretch and I came back to find out I had crashed due to a collision!! I mean, WTF?? Don't these guys use sonar to listen out for other ships, or even their bloody bins? I was surfaced, how can you collide with something??

Not sure if I can continue with this game tbh, it annoys me so much, and I only have it on the standard 29% realism!!

You could just turn off the dud torps? Early torpedos were unreliable, adds to the realism (and the frustration of course)!

just wondering, are you firing from very close range? When I did that none of the torps exploded (maybe theres a minimum arming range).

My next mission I went out and sunk a ship, but that time I was a little further out

I've now done about 2 missions and only sunk 1 ship which happened to pass by whilst I was cruising back to port. There's a lot of tapping fingers on desk and not much action, eh?

I had to try one mission again and thought it would be the same, so went to the co-ords of the first attempt and cruised around for an hour, checked the log and nothing was completed! D'oh. I had to go all the way across the map to another section! By the time I got there, half my crew were so tired that I couldn't man the torp rooms to attack a fleet.

The fight I have had make it very real though, managed to escape a convoy by what I read on here. Launched a torp at a merchant ship but it didn't sink, had a destroyer come straight at me so I crash dived and turned hard away from the path of the destroyer on full power, his depth charges missed, just, and once he had passed I rigged for silent running and got near my max depth, scary creaking going on! Waited for a bit and they passed by, so I surfaced and ran home. Intense? Oh yes!

I reached my patrol area in the Irish sea with only 3 torps left (1 front, 2 rear) and 3 days in, my sonar op goes mental calling out co-ordinates, I pop the scope up and the horizon is COVERED in ships

ruddy typical eh? Anyway I approached to within 2000m and fired my front torp into the centre of the convoy (I'm using manual TDC now so my hit-rate and accuracy is appalling at the moment. The torp hit a C3 but just started a fire So I turned around for a stern shot, as i'm turning I can see a Hunt Class Destroyer coming for me head on, with only seconds to play with I fired my stern torp and managed to completely miss every single ship in the convoy.

Amazing how I manage to do that

So I crash dive to 70m and hit hard rudder, just in time as my flack gun and conning tower are damaged by depth charges, as I'm so close to the convoy I head at flank right underneath the convoy, messing the destroyers attack run up completely

After about an hour of cruising directly under the convoy I turn to port and begin to ascend to periscope depth, and there I am, my last stern torp aiming directly at the side of a C3 Cargo at point-blank 300m (minimum torp distance)

I change the fuse to impact (to guarantee a bang) and set torp speed to fast - tube doors open - Los !

The external camera shows my torp arching around and within seconds slamming into the side of the C3 splitting the boat in half, and in the distance is a very angry detroyer helplessly sitting ont the other side of the convoy

I'm now crawling at 140m rigged for silent and heading home, a good days work and happy that I made my last shot count
