    Is this possible? .... CS:GO

This is not an easy question to find a clear answer to as I would have thought.

Is it possible to play CS:GO in this configuration :-

    - no Steam account
    - single player (bots ok)
    - no dodgy download sites, legit only

I fancy a bash but have zero interest in multi-player modes, and neither have nor want a Steam account.

I have seen a few "play without Steam" sites but they all (that I've seen) seem to involve downloading from a non-authorised site with "ripped" content. I have no interest in that 'cos first, illegal, and more importantly, dont trust any such site enough to risk that.

I don't mind a bot-based blast, but I'm not interested in playing against (or with) other people, and the whole thing isn't important enough to me to give in and use Steam.

My guess is, the answer is "no".

    Thanks.

Single player yes but you can't launch CS:GO without steam account

Is Steam required just to d/l and install. or to validate on starting a game?

i.e. if, once installed and first start-up, does it validate on game start? If so, I could then move my game machine back off-line, where it currently lives.

No you need it all the time, you can't run it without it. You could possibly try some of the dodgy ways of getting it to run but then you are in the realm of private servers etc and god knows what data they are going to extract from you

It is required to validate as far as I know, but you can make Steam "go offline" and then in theory it shouldn't need to reconnect to the internet unless something weird happens. So you could move your game machine back off-line, but you'd need to have the Steam application running when playing CS:GO.

Re: Is this possible? .... CS:GO

I thought it'd be like that. I vaguely remember coming to that conclusion way back when I looked at Steam and, IIRC, that was one of the reasons I decided "nope". But it was a very long time ago. And, hey, it could have changed, I guess.

So no CS:GO for me then. Oh well, it was a thought. A whimsical one though. And my urge to have a go isn't strong enough to worry about it. There's lotsa other stuff still on my "try that" list, and a fair few I've already bought on GOG, and still not tried.

    Thanks for the prompt clarification.

To echo what Jim said above, I was of course talking about getting the game running. You can validate it and have steam in offline mode and just play against bots but either way you would still need a steam account.

And note that every once in a while Steam needs to renew game validation online.

Re: Is this possible? .... CS:GO

I have an old DVD version of CS (the counter strike1 anthology) which is counterstrike plus condition zero add-on. I used to play it offline with MP bots on winXP laptop back in 2006. The box says it needs steam but it's a really old version and I don't think it ever needed online logins for single player. Ever. I will see if I can get it running on a VM.

If you want old MP games that can be run offline with bots then BF2/BF2(sf) with the 64 bot mod patches is also worth checking out.

    How about CS 1.6 ?
Add the rats map packs and life is complete

Here's a list of DRM Free games on Steam, if that helps.

Thanks ik, but I wouldn't waste your time with VMs (not on my account, anyway).

It was very much a whimsy. I'd just watched an old LTT vid about the how much actual benefit there was from FPS and/or monitor refresh rates to gaming. Which was interesting, but my main takeaway was that I'm old enough that it almost certainly makes beggar-all difference to my standard of reaction time. I don't need a stopwatch to test that .... more like a sundial. Or just a calendar.

Anyway, I kept seeing CS:GO used in gaming card tests on many/most sites and the whimsy took me .... have a go. For a moment, my "Steam? No way in hell" resolve wavered. But the whimsy has passed and there genuinely is so, sooo much I want to play, from redoing an old classic or six, to some new (to me) stuff I already have on GOG that it'd be stupid of me to start faffing with even more now, especially if it meant Steam.

So thanks, but I'll just work the stuff I've already bought before looking for more new stuff. I hope. That ranges from some of the old Sierra classics I never got to, to later versions of Thief etc I also never got to, to the likes of Witcher. And even, IIRC, Myst 3. What I might get is a new(er) SimCity. That's good for some hours. Or was, in my youf.

Re: Is this possible? .... CS:GO

it needs net connection to do first run and to activate. Steam will try and update on first run. I aborted as I couldn't be bothered to see how much bloat it downloaded. Is there a GOG version? If so that's probably the best bet

    Oh, it would be, yeah.

    Y'know, I think I checked and there wasn't, but .... BRB, ....

Thanks, Keef. Interesting to know. It's not what I was after though (single player, not multi).
