Dropping Skinning - effect on guild?

I have been thinking about this for a long time now, im considering dropping skinning........... only thing stopping me is the effect on the rest of the guild

I seem to have become the armour kit person, I spend a lot of time farming leather to make free armour kits for people, no problem doing that, but without leather its impossible.

I also seem to farm quite a bit for the trades, BS / Eng / tailoring, same again without skining impossible.

    Current skinners are: (regular players)

    Slarys
    Eru
    Dragnar
    Rentau
    Lugash
    Green piggy
    Reginald
    Ravenblood

Main reason why Id like to drop is to take on engineering, mainly for the jumper cables.........

Goblin jumper cables = 40% chance to rez
Goblin jumper cables XL = 70% chance to rez

Both cables have seperate 30 min cooldown timers, meaning that if the XL ones fail, i still have the normal ones to try - specially considering new patch means that they dont break when they fail any more.

Feign Death combined with ability to rez can help a lot in instances i have thought to myself over 10 times this week - if i had cables now, could save a lot of time

    Opinions please............

I can help out with the skinning, I'm on lvl 280 ish now.

My leather-working skills are really poor (lvl 70?), so I'll be taking a whole day/night skinning and trying to up my LW skill.

If anyone needs leather in the future, give me a shout.

With the new patch both types of cables will share a cooldown.

In my experience the jumpercables are one of the least useful engineering tools, working less than 10% of the time.

How many times have you tried it?

Ive spoke to several engineers and they are of the opinion of above....... also are you trying the XL or plain jumper cables?

Dropping a skill aint an easy choice, so the more info the better

My molten core raid today was saved from a wipe by jumper cables, they rock.

Also skinning is about the worst level 60 profession, especially if you have a lot of other skinners in guild.

The only reason I am still a skinner is for Devilsaur Leather, taking another skill would require a lot of help from the giuld (or a lot of money) to get the items needed to level up.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

I think I might make a stockpile of devilsaur leather and then drop skinning, dunno whether it's worth all the effort of training up to lvl 300 in a new skill.

I changed professions and took up leatherworking but it's a right pain in the backside. My skinning was already quite a high level and I find that the creatures I can kill and skin now don't provide the light leather I need to get my LW skill level up. So, I need to waste time killing no exp creatures just to get the leather I need to level up LW. It bores me and there's very little gain so I always find an excuse not to do it. Consequently my skinning is at 225 (I might do artisan training next) but my LW is at 34

As you say, best to make sure it's worth all the effort.

LW is pretty weak also. The best skills are probably engineering and alchemy in terms of usefulness of items produced and saleable merchandise. engineering goes will with mining and alchemy with herbalism, but that's by no means set in stone.

Sry, I had mining - I hated it. SO, so dull!! Skinning is great because it's immediate, you kill something, you skin it. The only thing that really galls me is you can't skin the centaurs!

I was considering dropping Engineering, I can't carry on without a high level in Mining now. Mining with Rentau was easy but he can't get much further now due to his level and I want to concentrate on Kerilus. Plus I can't see Engineering being that useful to me, I hardly ever use anything and selling Engineering items is hard as most need Engineering to use them anyway, so Engineers can just make them.

Skinning or Enchanting is the only way I can see myself going forward with Keri. I'd like to start enchanting again, but we have lots in the guild now. But saying that, with my high level in Tailoring it will be easy to level it up now! And think of all those Green/Blue soulbound items going to waste by being vended!

Think I've made up my mind now, what do you think? Sorry Mads, didn't want to thread hijack... just went on for too long!

Problem is no one wants leather in the end game, so you end up with stacks of rugged leather and nothing to do with it. I don't even skin much any more and typically have 100+ rugged leather spare in my vault at any given time.
