Viewing WoW sites through Websense

I've noticed a couple of you not able to view any Wow/games sites through Websense at work and I was getting annoyed at it myself so thought I'd share this.

Go to www.ultrareach.net and type in the url you want to go to in the bar, press the button to the right and hey presto! It depends on how 'l33t' your sysadmin is though, a thoroughly set up Websense installation should have this in it's blocklist but most don't.

Won't use it though, if sites have been banned, they're banned for a reason. Not gonna risk my job any more than I do!

I use that at college but it just doesn't load sometimes ... good when it does work though.

I wish! But most corporate client-side deployment strategies negate the ability to even attempt such things, unless you have a way that doesn't involve any tools that require installing client-side?

I think they can be accessed through a browser, can't they? I tried to look into setting up a VNC, but bloody hell, it was soooooooooo confusing!

VNC can yeah, again depending on the deployment but I'm not so sure about SSH. I've tried VNC through our firewall and it just sniggered at me so curious to investigate SSH setup.

okay, you'll need an ssh client that supports tunnelling (I suggest putty), an ssh server on your home machine, and a vnc installation (I'm using Ultr@vnc).

Setup your SSH server to run on the SSL port - 443 iirc (thus bypassing most firewalls )
Run the vnc server on it's default port

That's the server side done..

for the client side..
Set up ssh tunnels in putty, forward a local port (mine is set on port 82) to your server ip : port, and set the session to connect to your server ip and port 443. Don't forget to save the session config.

you're almost there..

crank up putty, load your session, connect to the server and log in.

open the ultranvc client, configure your bits (screensize/colour depth etc), and set the connection to connect to 127.0.0.1::82 (or whichever local port you decided to forward).

If you can connect via ssh and you find your vnc session complains about a loopback connection etc, enable the "allow loopback connections" on the server machine and it should fix it

It might take you a while to find a port combo that works depending on how good your network admin is

I doubt most people would be able to do that from their work, and I would imagine you'd get sacked for trying...

Does putty need to be 'installed' on the client (work) side? I need a solution that could run off say, a CD or a floppy disk that leaves no evidence on the client machine. Our system audits the dektops every so often and reports anything that deviates from the base install.

Putty doesnt need to be installed BUT i think it uses a reg key to store each connections details.

U mihgt be ok as long as you dont save any connections, but this would make it more of a PITA.

Used this alot - you can also do it with ssh and remote desktop

yup, it stores a couple of registry entries: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimonTatham\PuTTY
HKEY_USERS\Software\SimonTatham\PuTTY
