When i played my hunter i used 'The Rake' a lion from Mul Gore (and since my hunter is a dwarf running all the way to mulgore on a PVP server @ lvl 11 was a LONG journey!) good cat with an above adverage attack speed.

Since him ive had a few other named mobs (Ol' Sooty the Bear for example) but always gone back to Bob the Rake

    It's horses for courses basically.
High damage pets can be nice, probably the best one to tame is Takk the leaper in the barrens(lvl 19E) but high damage tend to have low hit points.
If you want to go the other way and get a high armour, low damage pet then the best bet is a bear as they eat absolutely ANYTHING.
Best all round pet to get is a cat and as dooms says there are a lot of cool named cats out there to tame if you want(the main difference between named and normal beasts will be the speed eg. Takk the leaper is much faster than a normal raptor)
If you want more advice whisper me in game as Greenpiggy or Calin and i can ask Balkoth who is the pet master.

Well AoD , like Mads i use two pets one for tanking (PVE/Instances) and one for pvp (High DPS and High Attack speed)

For tanking i use Ursius (lvl 56 elit bear from Wintersrping)
For PvP i use Rik'shiri (or something like that) (lvl 57 cat rare spawn in Winter srping)

And no , elite pets arent better then normal ones , some of them have unique looks , like Rik something.

The advantage of bears or boars , is the fact that they eat everything ( money saver)

Just have fun with the pet of your liking

Have had a cat before previously and his attack speed was impressive and he looked better than most!

At present I've a Crocalisk (from lvl 11 until 37 so far).
He just sits there taking hits. He doesn't do much damage but can be very useful occupying groups while you busy yourself picking your targets.
Granted he takes a while to get to the target but you can work round that when soloing. Of course when he gets in water he swims twice as fast as any character.
Food wise he's easy. He's not too picky as he'll eat whatever you cook, meat, and fish though I'm not sure about fungus. Only thing he seems to dislike is rotten or old meat.

If you want an eat-anything machine the best I've seen so far is a Boar
