Re: Who's still playing WoW then?

When will the new expansion be out!
just one thing to say "/played" ?

    I enjoyed playing WoW....

If you enjoy - keep playing,

WoW will not last forever......Lets face it Blizz are already working on the replacement for 2012 rumour has it will be a Super MMORPG ie - you can move to different worlds / servers with dynamic world interaction.......

Will be interesting to see if they can do what no other mmo company has managed and make a succesful sequel.

Re: Who's still playing WoW then?

A friend sent me an invite at the weekend, I had nothing else to do so decided to give it a try...

Unfortunately due to the new expansion (I think) the streaming demo was down and I was told I had to install the full game. This meant a 4gigish download which was fine, except on the servers I was told it would take 12 hours. On a 20mb connection. I managed to find a mirror, downloaded it...then had to sit through patch after patch after patch. What an infuriating process! Just went I thought I was all done, I was informed it would be downloading another 3gig patch which would take...12 hours. I gave up.

I've got a level 70 human paladin, and have been taking a break from WoW the last few months. With the new expansion pack out I decided to go back on it and maybe get the new expansion. I've gotta download a 1.62GB patch first though, which is taking quite a while

Re: Who's still playing WoW then?

I've had loads of WoW trials, everytime I level a character to around 18 and just can't be motivated any longer. For an mmo, every server I've played in (probably tried around 10 of them) has a severe lack of players. For example, I played as an Undead Warrior on the server it recommended me on. Up until level 12 I never saw another player... at all. It's lonely .

I've had queues up to 680 (over 30 minutes) to get onto Lightbringer and maybe 300 odd on Trollbane but given that has been shortly after expansion releases. The old world cities and adventure areas will be like ghost towns for the next several months until more people hit 80 and either start/resume playing alts or want to show off their gear in town. Northrend is anything but empty at the moment.

That's because we're all higher than 20+ on our alt characters - All 6 of mine are between 22-55.

I even did 1 to 20 in a day with a new character - an undead warrior and it's dead easy especially with questhelper or carbonite installled

Question Re: Who's still playing WoW then?

I've read and read and read and read, days, weeks. Now I feel sick.

    My system has been running well for YEARS;
    AMD 3000XP+
    1GB PC3200
    x800 PRO

I now have the cash to buy a new system. Sorry to say but for 90% of the time this system will be running World of Warcraft. The other 10% is film watching

Max budget....£2500, though I have done a lot of reading, and know that I don't have to spend close to that amount to have a nice new machine that runs WoW smoothly. WoW ran very very smooth until the new expansion packs/cities, where I lag right down to single digit FPS.

I'm not a complete noob, though I haven't looked at the market since I bought my machine (though I have just crammed as much info as I can)

    q6600? E5** ? I don't think I'll seriously consider an AMD?
    3/4/6/8 GB of RAM ? Do I definitely want the 1600mhz? DDR2/3??
    I THINK I want to go for a 4870 1gb....though I could be swayed.....I have been told a 9800gtx would be perfect.

I WANT A NEW SCREEN! My 21" hyundai bust ages ago, nicked my gf's samsung tv which doesn't run at native PC resolutions, I run wow in 1200x672. I want a sexy, expensive (not a THOUSAND though), big, low latency....... 22"? 24"? 26"??? 30" ?

I think I'd rather spend less on a top of the line i7, and less than a top of the line gfx card (because wow doesnt need it, also i've heard lots of problems with dual cards) - so that I can spend more on a sexy display.

I'm the type of guy that watches how long WinRAR takes for different things, I pay attention to details, though I'm not sure how well a WinRAR speed test relates to World of Warcraft performance.

I'm so blooody indecisive, I need people who know more than me to give me some opinions, pleeeease!

Any replies are more appreciated than you'll ever know,

    BMONK

[edit] P.S. - I built my machine before, I can do it again, I have no trouble buying all the components and whacking it all together, though.....I have been told that the difference in cost is getting lower as opposed to buying a pre-built custom PC? Having never done that though, I'm very weary of buying pre-built (I'd /suicide if it arrived and didn't work ((just kidding)) )
prebuilt=lazy, but cost effective? good deals to be had ?

Re: Who's still playing WoW then?

A 1GB Radeon 4870 or Geforce GTX260 should be more then sufficient to play up to 1920x1200 with max setting as long as it's backed up by a 3GHz CPU. 4GB RAM is a must for any new system that will play WoW, especially if it will run on Vista (64 bit Vista also!). The CPU could be an Qxxx or Exxx or even an AMD....as long as its around 3GHz or overclockable to 3GHz, it should not bottleneck the video card.

If you want to go above 1920x1200 (next step up is normally 2560x1600!), then you are looking at all top-end kit. 4870x2 or GTX295 and 3.2-3.5Ghz of CPU power to keep your framerates above 40fps on raids, big open areas and cities.

No need to go i7, no need for DDR3 - they will not make a difference to WoW.

People saying the WoW does not use the video card are misinformed or run on low resolution screens. Once you ramp the resolution up to 1920x1200 and above, the memory bandwidth of the video card starts to become VERY important. I run at 2560x1600 with a 4870x2.....I am not sure if I need the x2 (bought it for general gaming, not just WoW) but the 8800GTX I had before was at it's limits at 1920x1200, dipping substantially in certain areas but generally fine.....once I moved to 2560x1600 it was unplayable until changing the video card.
