First off check that windows can see your stick, if thats all ok then make sure you've got the drivers installed for it. What OS you running and what stick is it?

Skii used to fly a dead simple stick well, a Hat swicth and more buttons will help, the new saitekis a good value stick

You want to do following to take off

line up and get a good run, throttle up slowly to 160 to 180kph
and pull back slooowwwwly on stick, when up lift gear G and level off to build speed then climb.

While on runway use rudder < and > to control swing of plane

I took about 4 hours to take off, stick with it...And weeks (I kid u not to land )

Edit an il2 is a good plane to learn to take off in

    ... in addition....

    turn the engine one
... you also might want to lower the flaps to get a bit of extra lift (not everyone does... but Im a bit of a fan)

You will find it soo much easier to use the runway to take off, than bumbling along over grass/snow etc.

The variable thing would most likely be the throttle, but what you need to do is make sure you configure the joystick in the options screen before hand otherwise you won't know what any of your axis or buttons do...
