    BF2:patch 1.12 I have 100Gb free on a partition but I have 2Gb free on OS partition

Why do idiot game installations insist that u have 3Gb space on your OS partition? Also newsgroups? Huh? Why!

I dont want just one partition for a couple of reasons:

1), I can reinstall and format my OS partition without losing any data files on other partitons

2), I am not constantly fragmenting my OS partition by putting part files from p2p applications on the os partition so less defragmenting is necessary

Now that I am reinstalling my OS ( and need to repartition that drive ) Im lucky I have a 2nd drive with 100Gb free so I can copy my data to and then repartition my first drive with no problems of losing anything.

The 3 programs that insist u have large space available on your os partition that I have come across is BF2atch1.12, Star wars galaxies installation, and microsoft outlook express and mozilla thunderbird.

Installation of games should not require the code to be extracted to the c: drive - there is no valid reason. If they provided a zip - file I wouldnt be wasting 50min transfering 100Gb of data from one drive to another and then 20min installing the os with 10min to partition and another 1hr to get it back to the state where its usable.

Its just bad coding, nothing to do with the swap file. Good installers ask where I want to install my patch and should extract the patch for setup on the drive it started on, or a zip patch alternative would work too.

I only had 2gb left on windows partition (only need a 10gb one) and 350 odd gb left on other drives, but I just installed as usual anyways, and it seems to work OK.

control panel>system>advanced tab>enviromental variables - u can change windows temp directory here to another drive. I learned this after backing up and formating 1st HD making operating system partition 10Gb. Which seems a waste now.

Ah of course, I'd forgotten about that, thanks megatron. Is this part of the reason they say BF2 is better with 2gbs RAM, because many people don't have the spare room on their Windows Partition?

Is there a performance drop by moving the windows temp folder to another drive do you know btw? My Windows install is on my Raptor, and my documents take up the other 64gbs of that, and are pretty much full, so I might have to think of a major reshuffle.

If u have a 2nd hard drive then the windows swap file is supposed to be faster on that. Its got nout to do with 2Gb of ram, its to do with the amount of space that is needed for the installer package to unpack files ready for setup of the new patch.

I have a separate partition for my swap file and my operating system partition, just so they dont get fragmented with downloaded data. Also a separate operating system partition makes a clean format and reinstall (of the operating system) safe since u dont hold your data on the os partition.

I dunno, maybe it's down to the caching of things in the memory that the game needs for quicker access rather than the swapfile/hard-drive space.

I used to have 1 Gb of memory and I have some rather stupidly large raid arrays on my system and I seen an improvement when adding another 2 sticks of DDR PC3200 memory.

the game is so memory intensive its unreal...its why the browser on it is so bad and why anyone even people with uber pcs can get bad performance...

but hey thats what happens when EA tells dice to release the game 6montsh early...
2 gigs of ram in bf2 speeds up map loading times i know that but i aint sure about performance...ive heard of people running it on 3gigs... but the patch installers arent good at all tbh...takes half an hour to do most of the time for me
