Me262
Anyone actually tried flying this properly?
I've been setting myself up a few quick missions to have a play in it, in a fairly realistic situation that the 262 was used for, i.e bomber busting.
Those cannons are amazing. :o
But it's not the quickest turner and it's not that quick really since you can't wind the engines up without burning itself to bits. Catch 22?

The cannons are incredible - 4 x 30mm Mk 108 - goodbye to anything vaguely in front of you :D
The engines are still borked, it can't climb above 5000m ( bit strange for a jet) and falls out of the sky if the engines are shut down - which is wrong because it was an extremely good glider and LW pilots regularly had to glide back to base after shutting down engines or running out of fuel.
I'm not sure I agree with the engines bursting into flames if you move the throttle slightly too quickly - whilst I'm sure they had reliability problems and a short engine life, I've yet to read any accounts of that happening !
Nice plane - still needs some work on it, but an awesome bomber-buster (just don't get a bullet in those engines !!!!)

The 262's fun for a while , even if u do flame the engines u can cut power and dive and the flames go away :D
-
thing to do is get it steaming along by flying level for a bit after take off - get it above 350 and it won't go much slower unless you're really harsh with it..

I've noticed the only way I get the engines to flame is anything above 70% power for more than say 30 seconds. Keep an eye on the temp gauges and it's pretty manageable. As for the height issue, I've never bothered flying anything more than about 3k.
It's a blummin fantastic boom and zoomer though which is great for the bombers. Scream in, wait till near point blank and fire the rockets off, then loop it over and do the same again with the cannons on the next one. :D
I think we all ought to have a mass Me262 vs bomber night :D

some pple online seem to fly it a damn sight better than I do...
All ive worked out is that it makes a mess of anything that gets in its way,.. and flames easily on rapid changes in throttle
I can never seem to get enuff speed up in it.. .. probably too much turning .. as it is really a bnz bird

It's good fun taking it to the limits. 800Kph. You soon get used to be easy on the throttle. It doesn't seem to be so sensitive at high speed. Maybe it's a temp issue???
It's made worse by the fact you need to control the engines sepertately to taxi properly. Never take it above 75% on Taxi... If you do you are asking for trouble.

Managed to get it to 1005kph, then it exploded mid air, at around 4000ft. I. Love. This. Plane.

Ok history time,
May 22nd 1943 Adolf Galland
On arrival at the airfield 2 ME262s were ready for him, the chief test pilot took one up, landed, the plane was refulled and in hopped Adolf, the first engine started fine the second catch fire and boy did it burn.
Adolf quotes 520mph in level flight around 120mph quicker than anything it was likely to run into
"It was as though angels were pushing me"
Quote from The First and The Last Adolf Galland

been doing some research and found this in Alfred Prices Sky Battles
The lack of nickel and chromium to make hi temperature alloys ment that the engineers had to spray the inside of the combustion chambers with aluminum and make them from normal steel, giving each Jumo 004 engine approx 10 hours life time. Flame outs were common
This is worth reading for those who want to get to grips with this plane and includes a track
