Right, I used to be pretty into flight sims in my Amiga days (Interceptor Mmmmm) but aint played any for 'king ages.
Anyway, I'm been lurking this forum for a while and getting a bit of a taste. Where do I start? Is there a counter strike of flight sims atm? What's the defacto best one out there? Do people just play IL-2 or are there any mods out there?
Blah blah blah...
Edit: and what's IL2 forgotten battles? Is it an add on or a new game?
what you into? Jets ? Props? Combat Flight ? WW1? WW2? Single Player? Multiplayer?

If you're into WW2 multiplayer combat prop sims then I gotta say IL2FB is the puppy for you.. as for anything else I can't really say.. cos I'm hooked :)
IL2 Forgotten Battles is a stand alone game (currently running at patch 1.21) which as the offspring of IL2 (the two are not compatable) includes all the good bits of IL2 original plus a load more planes and some extra goodies that have come from requests from the community.
The online community is large (not CS counterstrike standard) and world wide. Some excellent online games can be had.. and there are a few online wars going on which you could participate in if you wished... notably Virtual Eastern Front
The single player side is good too ( although I am a multiplayer man myself) with the option to build and play some quick combat missions and also play a number of dynamic campaigns which should keep you busy for quite a while.
I started flight simming from scratch with this game ( ok.. i did dabble in MSCFS) and I've loved turning it round from the frustration of not being able to take off... to perform a climbing barrel roll out of the way of a diving 109 screaming in my headphones, applying full supercharger, adjusting fuel mix and prop pitch to bring him into my sights.
.. or... as is most likely the case... feeling a Mk108 canon shell rip my fuselage in half so I reach for the canopy lever..
It gets my vote.. totally immersing ( if youre into that type of thing) but then again I'm biased :)

right..warning to you my friend..if ya gethooked, your life bleeds away ;) but its a good community....possibly the best.
But it takes time...lots of it......I mean MONTHS with hours per week ;)
its not a very good single player game. You NEED broadband toplay on too.
But Ihave to admit now....it surpasses all my previous favourite games.....even Black and White, which effected me to the point of the tatoo, that me and Deck both had done.
I wil NOT be getting a red star on my arm though ;)

Small point of contention with my buddy Zak, I wouldn;t say that you need Broadband to play on line. Many vitual pilots use 56k and join servers in different countries.
But, welcome Dabeeeenster. I guess by now you have picked up the fact that a sim like IL2FB is a serious commitment. You can't just have the odd half hour a week. It's not like CS where you can come back after months of not playing and get into the groove fairly quickly.
But the rewards are unparalleled in the view of another convert like me (played CS for 4 years).
Ditto the Broadband thing. I did ok with a two button joystick and a dial up connection (providing the mission didn't last over 2 hours :D )

Right, as some peeps know I'm in Oz at the moment and only on a laptop. What's the minimal hardware I can get away with (control wise) to play?
The laptop has a geforce4 in it, and a massive screen so that's not a problem.
I dont mind a game that needs a bit of dedication. I played CS in a moderately ok clan for a year or so and liked applying myself, though I realise this is a different kettle of fish.
Just a rough guide, how long will it take me to learn to land :eek:
self centering joystick with variable rudder and throttle control, an 8 way POV Hat and 4 fire buttons ( anything else is a bonus)
A large bottle of vodka and some sandwiches for thos long hauls
Took me 2 days to nail it, however you need to understand the basic principles of flight in order to nderstand what your plane will do as you try to land it. Its a 'feel' that you develop, knowing if your coming in too steep or too shallow, etc.Quote:

Biggest mistake beginners make it cutting throttle completely, wondering why their plane stalls before they get to the runwy, and they literally fall out of the sky. As I say, its a feel that you will develop, and you will at some point marvel at how easy it is ;)

Saitek are pretty popular here...
I wouldnt think youd go far wrong with a Cyborg 3D USB Gold
I go the cyborg 3d platinum ( dunno what the difference is) for bout 25/30 quid new
POV = point of view.... HAT = that little twiddly button you moce around with your thumb so you can look out the windows.
Make sure the joystick either twists for rudder... or theres a separate variable rudder control.. Using the keyboard for rudder is an option, but a very very poor one... in fact a nightmare of an option :)

I used to have a force feedback... but actually prefer it without now.. .
BUt the fun with it when you first start is great.. the plane rumbles along the runway.. and positively recoils when you fire the big canons.. You can alse "feel" the bombs drop!
oh.. and I think it took me bout a week/fortinght to land fairly reasonable..
Still a bit bumpy now!
