look for a camera with decent glass (lens) and anything around 4MP - with manufacturers trying to cram as many MPix as they can into these very small sensors the noise in the pics is getting bad..

remember its not about how much zoom a camera has or how many MPix its got, its about the quality of picture it will give..

make sure you check out sample images (and not the ones that are resized for the web) for all the cameras you look at..

    Hi guys,

Sorry for the thread hijack, but can anyone recommend me a camera I can go into a London high street/specialist store and pick up at a reasonable price, around the £150 mark? I've got a last minute holiday and leave on Friday and need to pick up a camera - can't trust the online shops to deliver in time.

    Thanks

    Z

a vote for the fuji f30. i recommended it to several people and every one of them has come back to me amazed at their images and very grateful for the advice...can't say fairer than that about it.

big zooms are a false economy - you pay for the extra glass and the quality isn't always as good. best range is 28-110mm equivalent (or there abouts) where you get a decent range but don't sacrifice anything through poor glass. similarly smaller sensors with lots of pixels packed in make IQ go down hill, i'd say 6-8mpix is more than enough for 99.9% of the world's photography.
I use a sony P200 and its been great. well worth it and has made me enough to have paid for it several times over. I also use a 1dmkII thats 'only' 8mpix but would wipe the floor with some other cameras with more mpix...i guess it boils down to the fact that mpix aren't everything.

Find the camera you want online in a UK store at the price you want to pay, print out the page, and take it in to Jessops. They are rumoured to price match

    f30 is under £150
