Yeah, i just used my normal 50mm, my 55-200mm AF-S mounted normally and did it by hand. When i get the ring it'll be a lot better because you can more control it a lot more easily - it's really hard holding the second lens steady...
Supposedly you can use the kit lens too but the most popular is the 300mm. The disadvantage of shooting at 55 is the ring you get, you need to be at 200 to avoid getting vignetting. The reversed lens needs to be set to infinity as well as opened wide (so newer wave motor lenses without aperture control are effectively useless unless you can set it in camera beforehand). The advantage is pretty clear though - you can get well over 1:1 if you have the right lens combination!
I really want to try it on someone's eye...
It really shows up how grubby my macbook's keyboard is!
too big to post so i'll link to full size

just tried it by holding the lens against the camera.. very tedious and most of my shots were blurred to hell
Did you put it on another lens or was it only the 30mm?
What i did find too was that liveview - for once - is an absolute boon![]()
it was the 30mm on its own.. i had to use liveview too.. and my hands are all shakey when i have to hold the lens against the camera.
i just took some more but i'm going to work.. will post later of the lens stopped down
basically you go to aperture priority with the lens attached normally then you hold the dof preview button and remove the lens with dof preview still held down
i find the dof at f/1.4 wayyyy too small, i figure it's prolly less than 1mm heh
i use a 28-75 with a 50 reversed for my stuff

I might try that, i've got my 28-70, so i could just stick a step down ring on it...
another one from my sister. spooky tree in back garden, absolutely no image processsing whatsoever.

here's my model's eye

there's a few more i posted on there
get a 5p coin and compare with this to see the dof

I'm a noob using a cheapo handheld thingy but I think this photo came out quite well;

I like it
I'd probably nip into lightroom to make the sky stand out a bit more and reduce some of the background haze, but i love the depth of field (looks almost hyperfocal) and the silhouetted guy is a great touch.
Also, macro-wise, i found that using a tripod and shooting straight down, perpendicular to the object worked quite well. That way the depth of field plane is much more usable for flat objects (like coins). It also lets you stop right down and take shots to increase the dof without getting camera shake.
EDIT:
Found this little bugger running around my room -
Shot down using a tripod and teeny aperture
Short forwards on a window ledge - the black marker was so i could line up and get the focus set in the viewfinder/liveview
Composite of two images, one with the head in focus one with the back in focus
Oh and for scale:
If i get a job this summer i am sorely, sorely tempted to stump up for one of the proper AF-S macros and some tubes...
