ok so i tried the reversed lens macro thing again...
Lens on the camera 18-70mm, f4.5 @70mm, focused to infinity...
Held in from of the camera (reversed) 50mm prime lens, f1.8 focused to infinity...
but i get the lens on the photo....

doesn't look like your 50 is wide open..
the 50 was open as far as it goes, at 1.8... but i just tried it with my 70-300mm lens and the 50, and got more macro esque results, wee bit blurry because my hands were so shaky...

In the eyes of a non-professional they look pretty good. Out of curiosity what is it about a photo that lets you determine that is benefited from RAW?
rescue the sky for starters, bring out some of the shadow details etc..
