At the end of the day these things are subjective.
Someone can happily argue that a lens has some physical property which can be observed in a lab until the cows come home (I love the sanctity of numbers and empirical analysis!).
But no one can say something is bad. It is merely bad to them.
If you hang out on the likes of reddits photography forums you see a large number of pros telling people who are selling way more than them, their work is crap and that they are sellouts, so what.
If you like what you're doing it, keep doing it. If others like it to, then kudos.
For me photography is a hobby, pure and simple, I do it to relax, I have sold some images before, I have also sold some time, but I didn't enjoy it, so I don't bother. I don't see photography as a good carrier compared to my other options either, so that changes my perspective a bit. First and foremost I want to have fun doing it. I don't care how many people would argue my work is entirely derivative or corny (someone mentioned to me about one of my Vietnam trips, how unoriginal it was to have pictures of old people in traditional hats!) I enjoyed taking it, I enjoy flicking through them later and my gran enjoys her vicarious travel via them.
tl;dr Take constructive technical critique on board, take everything else as a joke, ala:

+1, completly agree.
I enjoy going out with my camera, and having a wander around my local area, finding places I have never been to before in the 3 years I have lived there, and getting some shots. Some shots I like, others I don't. But at the end of the day, I enjoyed it.
It doesnt stop there either, as a web designer I have always had a bit of an interest in graphic design, but in the past I have always just used Adobe Firewoks for any small bits of graphic work I have had to do myself, but thanks to photography I am now teaching my self Lightroom and Photoshop, which I am sure will only benefit me in my career too.
Took some pictures today whilst revamping my poker :)
Hopefully will get around to sorting out some more Petanque pictures soon so I can get them uploaded.
