Nice shot Animus, but I think the flare spoils it a little. That's personal taste though, congrats on your achievement!

lol - the above are straight out of the camera.
Well well well :)
Some one likes my macro stuff :) The Northampton Chronicle & Echo (local evening paper here) wants to do a feature on me and my piccies :) Meeting at Summer Leys on Friday. Wish me luck :)
Well done Dave. Rather liking these macros and tempted to have a dabble at an old 100mm lens and have a go myself. I need something to gee me up - Been months since I was happy with anything.
Nice one Dave, well done.
Cool POTC macro there..looks like he's gonna knock ya block off...groan...:)

hehe yea! Mind you i need a lot of practice before i start producing consistent decent look street pics! i bet your first batch where as awful as mine ;)
You guys will probably see 2-3 decent pics a week from me!
Congrats David.
First shot's a beaut stavroshamster.
Keep at it Josh, I too want to get better at street photography and it is difficult but what I've come to learn (from my limited experience) is that not to go out trying to hunt for the perfect photo, but instead to be receptive and try to capture what you see rather than what you're looking at. I really hope that makes any sense; doesn't help that I'm still half asleep.

What might be helpful Jonny, and just a suggestion, is to consider a caption for each street photo that you think might be worth posting up. Not a jokey one, but something that stands out about the photo - a theme, a thought, a question etc. Help us to interpret what the photo is saying to you, and as a result you'll start thinking about the reason you're taking a photo, which will help you spot and take more meaningful photos in the future.
For Crazy's I instantly think 'geometry' - the way the rectangles go to rhomboids and they create streaks of light with the moire as they fade to the distance. Of course, that might not be what he was specifically thinking, but the photo has something in it that allows me to think it :p
Cheers pal, will do that!
More macro from me, trying to improve the DOF by going up to f11 - f13 ish, no post processing whatsoever, just simply resized at 70% JPG compression.

This. If you look at photography forums, a lot of beginners post up any old pictures. Often the first question is "why did you take this picture?" What does it say? What's the story? What are you trying to convey? If you can't answer any of these questions and you've just taken it because you've taken it, is there really any worth in the photo? I went to Portobello Market on Saturday and took my camera. I didn't take a single photo. There were 1000s people there, any of which I could have taken a photo of, but what would be the point? There was nothing (which I saw anyway) that said something to me, or told a story. I'm not saying never take any pictures, but if you do go out looking for photos, try to look deeper than just "oh there's a person on the street, I'll take a photo of him/her". I hope that's of use!
[QUOTE=Bobster;1094609]not really a photo-a-day, but was the last time i got a chance to get the camera out for myself ;)
this is truly amazing...........love it
Some nice advices here about street photography. i will try and take less pics and choose my timing wisely.
here are some i took yesterday:

i like this pic because not only is the camera equipment he is using angled using an interesting tripod i have never seen, his own body is angles nearly the same as the camera housed in that tripod. Its as if him and the camera and tripod are an all in one object attached together.

Sure.
I shoot with a Panasonic GF1 with the 20mm F1.7 lens.
As for PP; I guess you're referring to the last two shots, those were done using a plugin I'm trying out called Alien Skin Exposure 3 (it's available for both Lightroom and Photoshop). There I just tweaked a preset I liked. With previous shots I just played around with a few different setting and techniques (IMO most of those shots turned out mediocre at best. Still learning :)).
The lens would have to get credit for all the 'focussyness', but sometimes I like to amplify the effect by increasing the contrast and crushing the blacks a little.
Todays macros are of a scorpion fly, lots about right now in Northants, I esp love that tail section !!

Dave, nice shots :) do you manually focus or auto focus with the maco? have you looked into stacking?
Great couple of street shots there josh :) Love the first one.
and thanks Bob, much appreciated. On this set it was AF, but I often do use manual. And no, not tried stacking my macros yet, walking before running :)
Just back from paper interview, took them an hour ! Enough to fill a whole page I reckon !!
Nice work! The macros look a bit soft, not sure if you've missed the focus or just not a enough DoF? I'm not sure if you're trying to get the focus on the eye, but from what I've seen of macro stuff on talkphotography, always get the eye sharp, like this :D (not my work!)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3020/...77ced943_b.jpg
He's fighting a whole bunch of factors! They're cropped quite a lot, so the AA filter and diffraction softness are quite visible. There could be a bit of motion blur, and finally there are some heavy Jpeg compression artefacts!
Your example looks to be using rather more specialist equipment - namely dedicated macro lighting and a longer reach lens :p
True but that's all part of macro photography, some of which you can change (motion blur) etc. I reckon he could get the eye sharper, and anyway the focus point isn't on the eye, it looks like it's on the forelegs ;)
*edit* The above was taken with a canon Mpe 65mm Lens...a quick read suggests it's not actually 65mm (Daves is a 90mm just in case you didn't know) but I don't know if that means it's easier to take macro with or not.
Get closer, less cropping :P That's part of the skill! But anyway let's move on because I don't want it to sound like I'm attacking Daves photos and saying he's not got any skill, which is obviously not true since his other macros have been great (and these aren't bad, just not perfect imo)!
macro can be fun :) especially when you find an old magnifying glass knocking about at your FiL
my first dabbles into Macro..
http://www.pbase.com/bob_hall/image/74845352.jpg
That lens allows up to 5x magnification whereas a standard macro lens only allows up to 1x - its a completely different animal as far as I understand, and the comparison between Dave's shot and your example aren't really that simple. For a start they'd almost definately be using a pretty expensive lighting setup with that lens as images would get very dark at that magnification, and are probably using a tripod etc too (and there's no guarantee the subject is even alive!).
Oh, and it's not as easy as just getting closer - the closer you get, the shallower the DOF - this means you might need to ramp up the f-number which leads to diffraction issues and requires more light/higher ISO or a slower shutter speed (at the risk of motion blur)...
I agree with you about the eyes though - they would be a better shots if they had been in focus - but for someone who is just starting out with macro they are still pretty good, and will be sure to get better with practice... I think some of his earlier examples were better from a technique/composition POV, but the subject in these ones is great - I've never seen one of those flies up close before - ugly looking things!
I'm fine with any crits guys, you know that :) I've only been at it a few weeks, and it is a long learning curve.
When you get to only 2 inches away with this lens, dof even at f15 is only a couple of mm and being in a wheelchair I do have limited mobility so I can't always get into the right position for equal focus all along a body for example - it all adds to the challenge and fun :)
Anyway - I do like the OOF areas sometimes :) Who says for "art" it all has to be sharply in focus :)
Interesting crack on the macros. I like Daves shot and (never having taken any) I think getting the exact point of focus must be bloody difficult.

kushti, I hate you :)

Cheers guys
It had been a long day out even by then Dave :-)
Up Catbells in the dark waiting for the sun to hit Skiddaw and then saw that wee bit of mist after I got down.
I got hung upon a couple of long exposures over Derwent Water and never paid attention to this and a couple of others. Wrong idea as this is better imo than the ones I'd taken earlier.

The last two shots were inside oxford circus station after 6pm and it was empty around those corridors! its usually jam packed during the morning and evenings!
Nice set josh, esp that last one !! I love abstracts with angles !
Josh:
First pic; no, just doesn't do or say anything and the 'quirky' angle is irritating.
Second: Nice, good capture almost looks posed. Can't fault it really other than it could do with an exposure tweak to brighten it up a smidge.
Third: Definitely no, out of focus and frankly a bit creepy, makes me uncomfortable. Taking photos of lone women in the underground borders on getting yourself arrested.
Fourth: Bang, on the money. Nice and crisp, good lines leading the eye through the shot. Keeper.
Last one is spot on. Great lines and perspective.
Cracking shot Kushti, but your link's broken :(
Fixed now. Not sure what happened there.

rox0r nice shots mate. done using your 70-200mm? do u have any pics of using that lens in low light, no flash and with IS enabled?
can you post a few please? debating on buying that lens
Sory Josh I don't really have any 'low light' handheld shots with it, the only occasion I'd have for those conditions would be indoors and the 70-200 isn't really the beast for that job as I have the Canon f2.8 17-55 in the bag instead.
Really ? Maybe my monitor has a different setting, but to my (slightly short sighted) eye, I cant see any.
I'll redo it and post the two together, see what difference it makes. Compression was down to 70% BTW.
Yeah - it's particularly bad on my screen where there is a sharp transition in colour e.g. between antenna and flower, and flower and background.
I don't have particularly steady hands so IS helps at longer focal lengths for handheld shots such as the blue tit at 200mm. I'm not one for lugging the tripod around so anything that helps to stop my shots looking like a gorilla high on caffeine took them is a win for me.
OK, heres the no compression :
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2611/...5f018bda_o.jpg
and with compression :
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5262/...7e0d5572_o.jpg
Ahhhhh, NOW I see what you mean ! Agreed. It's the 70% compression causing it. I'll try and stick to uncompressed in future :0
Thanks.
There shouldn't be noise reduction going on at ISO 400 on a D90 surely?
The no compression is a lot better, especially the edges, and 600k is not too big IMHO, however you could probably go to 90-95% compression for some reduction in size without creating artefacts.
But there is still some blurring and artefacts at edges in the no compression pic - look at the edge of the buttercup where it meets the green. Something in the process is causing this as it looks to be more than just the AA filter. How are you resizing the images?
Sorry bob !
Hmmmm, OK, theres no noise reduction or sharpening in software, maybe its the sharpening in camera thats doing it. Using Redstone resizer to resize, max long side to 1024pix.
Food for thought chaps thanks for pointing it out. Ill have a look at some of my other images too...
Yea i will mate. not intensional. was a random shot just to see if i can handhold a shot in dark conditions. Dont normaly take shots inside shops as i know in most cases your not allowed
Not sure if you're aware, but you should (at least for birds, not sure about other things) try to avoid taking them at 4ish as they often come out flat with low contrast due to the light at that time of day. I guess that's why your BT doesn't "pop". Although your edit does look a lot better, if not slightly over sharpened to my eyes. Nice one regardless though!
Tbh I don't do a lot of birding so I'll bear that in mind thanks.
