Clunk, I have a some nifty DoF calculators from Thom (www.bythom.com) which work it all out for you.
If you want, let me know what focal distance is and I'll give you the start-of-focus and end-of-focus distances at a given aperture :) Very handy :)
i would recommend this:

Thanks :)
I left the Exif data in the wasp pic.
Looking at the dofmaster chart, I entered the values and it gave me this for f/2.8.

Total 0.02 in
In front of subject 0.01 in (50%)
Behind subject 0.01 in (50%)
Hyperfocal distance 2639.7 in
Circle of confusion 0.019 mm
And this for f/4.

I like the circle of confusion, that kind of sums it up

This is probably one of the closest shots I've ever got.
I can't remember the settings but it was with a 50mm and some extension tubes.

looking like a nice dynamic shot there m8, it doesn't matter that the colours aren't visible, its clear to see that they're the arrows :D

Bobster .... funny what you see wondering around Dorset these days, huh. Bloody global warming.
Some great pics recently...
Dammit, stirrer :)
Seriously though, I could have used the fill light to improve the colours on the planes, but with the sun being above them, anything I tried seemed to wash out the other colours. I think I achieved a sense of motion in the shot, which is what I was pleased with. Only my second airshow, so plenty more practice to come :)
That's one of the best I've seen of the Arrows, well done.
Thanks :) and another

Those arrows shots are magnificent - without the sun glinting off the cockpits they could be oil paintings rather than photos!
Time to bring the standards back down with more compact P&S shots - lavender's already finishing now and the honey bees have only just found our garden.

Wow - some very nice pictures here
Love the animal ones, but best of all the lavendar and air show pics.
