A very cold Black Prince
Went down to my local park today, its pretty cold!
1 more - found a giant snowman at the park, its about 8 foot high!
Nice pictures Yorkieben.
Taken on a Canon 50mm 1:1.8 which I got for Xmas. I,m getting quite a number of slightly out of focus shots on autofocus -something not right , probabally me . Anyway i,ve got a tree story to compose about an old elm -not this one though. This is a elm also cut down to make way for a new bypass. As you can see it has a bit of rot on the inside but not to bad.

One from the weekend whilst experimenting with various settings on my new camera, a 1000d with 55-250 efs is lens. Any comments / tips appreciated, please be gentle i am still very new to this dslr game having only had the camera a few weeks. No tweaking in any picture editor just cropped.

camera has coped well with the subject, but it looks a little soft.. (i would say its camera shake, but ur shooting @ 1/400 @ 250mm so that shouldnt really be the issue) its either the lens or that you weren't 100% in focus, the Coal Tit should really be sharper than that..

Thanks for the comments Bobster. Mind if i ask a newbie type question. Could the softness be down to the UV filter i have on my lens, or just down to my "beginners" set up, the lens is a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS.
Also how did you find the exif data, i assume its embedded in the picture but i can only see it under the properties on the pic on my pc, not on the uploaded one.
arg, UV filter.. i wouldn't bother unless you're doing something dangerous with the lens, like Shooting Painball/Airsoft
i'm guessing that the sales guy in Jessops told you that you need one? cheap UV filters can really make your image suffer, a decent filter will set you back £50-70
i use a FireFox addon called FxIF, gives me the following from your photo (won't if you use the save for web in PS, this strips the EXIF):
Camera Make: Canon
Camera Model: Canon EOS 1000D
Image Date: 2009:02:05 10:42:34
Flash Used: No
Focal Length: 250.0mm
CCD Width: 22.25mm
Exposure Time: 0.0025 s (1/400)
Aperture: f/7.1
ISO equiv: 400
White Balance: Auto
Exposure: program (Auto)
i'd suggest that you take the UV filter off, select AV (set your aperture at f8)and use the center focus point, and go out and shoot again @ 250mm - try a shot with IS on and one with IS off..

Fair enough i'll give those suggestions a go, thanks again .
The filter is one that came with the lens package (along with a padded case which will be more useful than the filter by the sound of it) so i guess its probably a cheapo one, i'll save my pennies and get something a bit better. I'd prefer to have something on there just to offer a bit of protection as its easier to clean / replace should something go a bit pear shaped.
did you get the hood for the lens? might be worth getting that instead of using a UV filter..

No i didn't, i was beginning to think might be the better option if lenses are going to cause issues. Definately the cheaper option for now anyway.
Cheers
