I already have the D7100 the D810 would be better for landscapes and cropping, night photography, family photos. I could still use a fx camera on large mammals like deer where the crop factor isnt required. Macro photopgraphy on fungi and flowers may also bnenefit from a bigger sensor.

    Re: Photo-a-day

What glass do you have computerman?

I ask because the difference between the D7100 and D810 is probably not £1.5k worth, unless you already have the best glass.

    http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon-D7100-vs-Nikon-D810

We see that it's got a whole ev more dynamic range. This will really help in landscape, low light etc.

Yet at the same time, people still use canon. I say this because their latest 7Dii has almost two EV less than your 7100.

When it comes to macro, isn't it often the lack of DoF that is the problem? As such, remember going to a larger sensor will result in less available DoF at equivalence distances (with equivalent effective zoom, ie mm divided by 1.5).

But also, glass kind of holds it's value, there hasn't been a massive breakthrough in years. I remember trying to explain on ocuk that some of the fancy lens coatings that are been sold, are just tiny revisions on techniques that have been in use for hundreds of years. The biggest shake up has been sigma becoming better!

Meanwhile, bodies in the last 10 years have massively changed and improved. Making the old ones quite worthless, unlike 10 year old glass.

because they've invested heavily in Canon lenses, there are more primes available for Canon also.. there's more to choosing a camera than hey look the EV is better on that other camera to this camera even though this camera feels better in your hands, has better AF a bigger buffer for images, feels more intuitive to shoot etc.

Which is exactly why I was asking him about what glass he has!

As for the AF system, that is often a product of lens too. It's effectively a second order system, most being an under-damped oscillatory response, this makes it's hard to objectively judge just a body in isolation. Again my suggestion of spending your hard earned on good or maybe even just exciting glass. However, we can talk about certain body features, contrast vs phase detect, we can also talk about the EV rating of the phase detect, which will help for low light. However, I think it's going to be counter productive to do that (Pentax wins currently ) because there is so much magic in the control for that complex second order system that is auto focus. These are hard to measure without taking into account the whole setup, lens included again, and defining scenarios for which you wish to measure performance.

I feel like you've taken something out of context, as I'm suggesting that DSLRs have hit this kind of improvement peak where little really matters, without high gains of cost. For instance, computer gamers have noticed this:

This is why I find the mobile phone and micro 4/3rds sensor evolution more interesting to the engineer in me. More so as my understanding of lens production means that 4/3rds is a much more economic size to be working, than APS/35mm/Medium etc, which only really matter when we are talking about wavelength constrained issues, which thankfully our eyes aren't so great at anyway, due perhaps to the same physical limitations.

Was actually the effect I was trying for with this picture of Josh, both he and I in portrait benefit from having something to distract you from

Sadly, because I was shooting so wide open (2.2 on a 1.8 lens) you can actually count the 9 elements quite easily.

The balls themselves were provided by the christmas tree in Covent Garden market.

Marcus did a really interesting explanation of how to calculate bokeh here http://www.marcuswinter.de/archives/1703

Im not spending £1700 when my D7100 is not even half a year old, its just my ideal full frame slr for non wildlife. Id like to own it one day maybe in a years time. The fat robin was still by the cafe today couldnt get a good shot as he had a shadow from a branch running thru him.

So you are saying once again I've not been accused of having big balls

Sorry I've flipped over to just high DPI screens everywhere now, so I kind of forget what the web is mostly used as.

imgur's default size might be easier? http://imgur.com/a/Ogdk8
