    Re: Photo-a-day

you hit up RIAT, nice! I popped up to Wales on Sunday evening to hit the Loop for departures, but the weather had different ideas.. you need to practice your panning on some cars/cyclists

Caught this black bagged WA64 on the way home.

PS: anyone with a clear couple of days next week might want to hit up the MFTA on Mon/Tues/Weds.

Thanks for the tip Rob. I havent been to heathrow since last year I could go there maybe next week and practice panning while the planes land and take off.

Is that referring to planes / cars or both?

cars and stuff with props/rotors - jets you can kinda get away with 1/250+ depending on how much blur you want in the background..

This was 1/400. Speed of the jet, focal length and distance from aircraft to background means I can get away with a faster shutter.

    Re: Photo-a-day

Nice shot there bob, like the fact we can make out the exhaust vent.

As for tracking speeds, if you want a propeller circle, then the timings will depend. On what you are looking at, older style piston engines will range from 500rpm to 2,500rpm in normal use. When coming into land, or descending fast, they will be at their slowest, when climbing or going flat out, their fastest, when cruising, normally just about 2000rpm. So if we want a perfect prop circle this latter number, for a twin blade prop will be 1/60th, for a tri-blade, 1/100th. However, when descending, these numbers can obviously change a lot, to about 1/10th to get the full circle of the prop. Constant speed props are generally around 2000rpm, these change pitch, rather than rpm to change the power.

Turbo props are bit more fun. The older designs have much the same speed, but never ones often seldom go above 1000rpm. But turboprops seldom have fewer than 4 blades, many have 6 now. So the shutter speeds are often a fair bit quicker.

Helis, now whilst most are ugly and not worthy of photographing (fixed wing pilots know the real reason they fly is their so ugly the ground pushes them away), but taking the Bell Iroquois which is quite iconic, that has an rpm of about 300 for it's main blade iirc. This makes them really hard, about 1/10th of a second for a full sweep, but unlike the single prop, this isn't a power to idle glide RPM, this is the RPM almost always, helis like variable pitch props do not change speed for power.

On a different note, was playing with some GoPros, a friend made this video

Cross wind suckered me a meter on the way back.

I'd consider it, but it's a very long way to go unfortunately!

takes 1/20 to get a Lynx full disc

pretty sure it would take less than 1/10 to capture the Bell in full disc, as this one was 1/40.

    Re: Photo-a-day

Lynx one is nice, wonder what he was loading?

Most Lynx in the UK are 4 blade, so will require less time to get a full disc look, as we are not waiting for a whole rotation, just a quarter one.

There are going to be variances between types, the only Huey I've been in was 330~ ish RPM and I had to buy drinks for the night because I couldn't hover it It was a twin blade so the maths for 1/10th would be correct. Obviously some may be faster and others slower, but I think that isn't that far off 1/4th of a 180° rotation per blade, maybe 1/5, but it's more than 1/6th!

Computerman: Where abouts is that? I'm assuming it's a reserve?

    Re: Photo-a-day

I think as others have said for props you can up the shutter speed for take off for most types.

That being said I'm not of the opinion getting discs is vital.
