Camera suggestion - about £300 suitable for astrophotography

I'm looking to buy my first digital SLR soon, with a view to getting into astrophotography eventually. I'm therefore looking for something with an extremely long exposure time for pole star shots, and a good telescope mounting. I'm finding the choice overwhelming at the moment, and would appreciate some suggestions. Budget can be stretched.

    Cheers guys

canon's have the best sensor for long exposures and most astro ppl seem to use and recommend canons, so 400d or 40d if you can stretch to it i'd say, although the 400d should be more than fine and being lighter is probably helpfull

You might have to stretch ruggerbugger's budget a little over his £300 if he goes for the 40D. £700 is probably closer.

For the second time in a couple of weeks, I'll point someone (with permission from HEXUS management) at our Digital Darkroom forums at The Digital Darkroom.

Ruggerbugger, one of our mods (Denton) is into astrophotography, and I'm sure he'd pass on the benefits of quite a bit of experience.

Thanks Saracen. You're right in saying £700 is a little over budget . I'll have a look at the Digital Darkroom.
