    Canon 40D vs Canon 5D

    Dilema!

I've been offered a 5D in pristine condition, for the price of a 40D. What do I do?

The 5D is three years old now, and the specs really don't sparkle as they once did....expecially the multiple frame capture rate (3fps for 60JPEGs). Is the 5D still better than the next generation down?

    Anyone?

Re: Canon 40D vs Canon 5D

IQ on the 40 and the 5 are approx the same, the only difference in the picture is the FF of the 5 really shines. 3fps is because its not aimed towards the sports shooter, but rather those who shoot weddings, and other formal events..

how many clicks has it done? i believe the shutter life on the 5 is 100K

i guess you have to ask yourself how many wide shots do you take..

Re: Canon 40D vs Canon 5D

Thanks Bob, knew I could count on you

    <5,000 shots

Don't know on the WA tbh, as I'd only just picked up the Tamron, and the widest lens I'd had prior was the Canon 35mm f2. I think I'm more of a portraiture and candid guy, which is why the 1.6 crop always worked in my favour.

But I hear that full frame is great, and the viewfinder on the 5D is beautiful....

    Arrrrrrrggggghhhhhhh......why is it never easy?

Re: Canon 40D vs Canon 5D

    i know

still you have a 20D for the crop

there are quite a few togs i know who use a 5 for the close action with a 20 for the candids

Re: Canon 40D vs Canon 5D

just been chatting to a tog about the colour difference between the 40 and 5, he loves the colours out of the 40D over the 5 because of the extra 2 bits of data in RAW conversion..

Re: Canon 40D vs Canon 5D

Are you saying that that particular 5D is three years old?

If so, for me, the big question would be whether the benefits of the 5D (such as they are) justifies buying a used camera (with the limitations that implies in terms of warranty, etc) over a brand new 40D. For me, it's a clear decision. But your priorities and needs may be different.

Sounds to me like the 5D really needs a replacement.

Re: Canon 40D vs Canon 5D

The 5D I've been offered is around 4 months old I believe.

Thing is that I know I'm going to be hating having a 5D as soon as the 5D MK II is released, but I really like the idea of FF and the better viewfinder.

I think I'm going to go for the 5D, and if it's not up to scratch, sell it. I'm pretty sure I can get back what I'm paying for it (it's actually less than the cost of a 40D by quite a margin), and if I like it, I get to keep it...

I think 14bit is definitely the way forwards...in terms of editing it can withstand far more pushing and pulling about to get the desired affect
