Re: Canon announces the EOS 7D

Meh! I would probably wait for whenever the 60D comes out TBH and spend the money saved on better glass. I don't seem to be excited by any of the £1200+ APS-C dSLRs.

Hopefully the Sony A850 will go down to around the £1500 mark in the next few months as it is around 2000 USD already in the United States!!

TBH,the only Canon dSLR which interests me is the 5D Mark II primarily since you can use the excellent TS-E 24mm 3.5L II lens! It would be nice if a cheaper 35mm frame body would be released though. Canon does seem to have the best wide angle tilt shift lenses IMHO for 35mm sensor size dSLRs. The Nikon tilt shift lenses are limited to tilting in only one axis!!

Looks like I will be building my own DIY tilt shift lens until I have the funds available!!

I will probably look at some other designs too.The optical quality of the lens baby looks a bit suspect IMHO. I will have to consider whether a 35mm lens has a large enough image circle for tilting or shifting on an APS-C dSLR though as I have an old 24mm Nikkor AI lens I maybe able to use.

well acutally its all about the photographer

But whilst the old adage of cheap camera expensive glass was probably true in the days of film, for digital the quality of the body plays a big part - high ISO performance, dynamic range, autofocus system, handling.

Put expensive glass on a budget body is not as bad as putting cheap glass on an expensive body but neither are ideal.

The 7D is interesting, depending on the high ISO performance will be a great alternative to the 1D for the Canon sports shooter - interested to see how 18MP on an APS-C sensor handles, the 15MP sensor showed some limitations in this regard from what I read.

Nikon have a fight on their hands at the top of the APS food chain that is for sure.

Except that even relatively cheap dSLRs have above 3.5 stops of highlight range with many like the D5000 having around 4 stops and this is with jpegs. Most dSLRs also have acceptable ISO performance upto ISO 800 and ISO 1600 which is enough for most people. Lens stabilisation is available even on cheaper dSLRs and is filtering its way through to cheaper lenses too. The autofocus system of a cheap dSLR like the A200(it has a 9 point AF) I use is good enough for use at even an air-show or motoring event as I have known people who used them in these situations. Even my old film Dynax 5(7 point AF) was fast enough for use at Farnborough. If anything having a lens with built in SSM or a higher gearing(if it is screw drive) is a more important factor.
On top of this most modern dSLRs are at least 10MP to 12MP which is plenty for most people.

Clever money goes on the lenses as these will hold their value whereas the dSLR body will lose value like the relationship between altitude and a lead balloon. I would go for the cheapest dSLR body that does the job IMHO.

what insult? did i insult you? how?

plus i thought the higher ISO you use the more noisy and compressed the image quality gets

Re: Canon announces the EOS 7D

Calm down folks, it's only a commercial camera..

I'm liking it quite a lot, I don't however, like the price - as usual it's the €/£ straight conversion *shakeyfist*

But as with everything else, the price will plummet shortly after launch

I might even be tempted to flog my 30D.. Or I might keep it as a 2nd body..
