    Camera for my gran...

    Well...

My mum was going to buy a camera... but didn't, so it's up to me, and it's got to be with me before Friday! (Monday at the latest) - It's my Gran's 80th soon, and she was a keen photographer, but hasn't had a digital before, but I need it before I go abroad to visit her! [Alternative is to buy one from Amazon.fr]

Anyway I'm looking to spend about £100; ideally it should have a big, bright screen; be easy to use. run on SD Cards (SDHC is OK) - so she can view them on her panasonic TV and have reasonable picture quality.

Absolutely any recommendations please send them my way, I guess ease of use is key, if there is an offer with a case and memory card then that is a big bonus

    Thanks!

    Re: Camera for my gran...

Amazon UK has currently a Canon digital IXUS 95 for £99 !!! (RRP = £189) bargain. Canon prob one of the best camera manufacturers, i have 2 and have owned 2 others in the last 10 years or so, from film to digital and SLR. It is fully SD and SDHC compatible and has analogue out for your tv. Hope you found this useful, and you get the present sorted soon.

    J

As above - get the best Canon you can for the price. Truly excellent point and click cameras and very reliable.

    Re: Camera for my gran...

But are they easy to use, the screen is smaller than others in the class, isn't the Ixus 95 a fairly old one, old tech?

I admit having seen my brothers they do seem good. I did see the Ixus 95, and also saw the Pentax H90 but I can imagine they are different classes.

Essentially useability, easy big buttons that she couldnt accidentally press.

Thanks for your advice, and welcome to the forums biomedman

They are as easy to use as making sure the wheel / switch is on the highlighted green camera, half pressing the shutter to focus and then a full press to take the picture.

If your budget can stretch, the Powershot range would be better in terms of "easy big buttons" as the Ixus range is designed more as a super compact.

About 12 quid over, but: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerS...0259888&sr=8-4
Or £15 over for red: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerS...259888&sr=8-15

Jessops is your place for situations like this though - go and look at the cameras, hold them, play with them take a few snaps...is it comfortable to them? easy to use? Don't need to buy it from them remember

    Re: Camera for my gran...

The nice thing about the canons is the green shoot switch - in that mode the ixus basically does everything for you - you just press the shutter. You don't even need to half press to pre-focus, as in the green mode they'll automatically focus on the fly. They'll also switch mode (to macro etc.) fully automatically when the camera recognises it's looking at a scene that should be using macro or whatever.

Half pushing really does help though, even in the 'green button' mode - I've seen a few (but not many) blurry photos still without the half press.
