I'll take a D800 please.
I'm a Nikon man, and Canon's specs always seemed lopsided to me, yet the gulf between the recently announced full frame Nikon cameras is... well a gulf. It desperately needs something in the middle.
As someone who rarely takes sports photos any longer, other than the inflated RRP, I'm thinking the 5D3 would be ideal for me. I'm not going to ditch my Nikon gear and move to Canon (especially as it'll all go full swing again in a couple of years, and every other release thereafter), but if Nikon would make the D300s replacement a full frame body which sat somewhere around a stripped down D4, while still at 14-24mp, I'd be snapping that out of their hands. The D800 would be fantastic for where I primarily use a camera - in the studio, but I'd worry that in anything other than optimum shooting conditions with optimum gear it's going to be a bit of a handful.
I never thought I'd say this with the megapixel race of the past decade, but with the D800, if nothing else you could afford to be a bit more lax with your framing rather than spending the extra time to recompose, only to lose that fantastic split-second a smile that'll never return. I'd find that a real bonus working in a school, doing portraits. I'm ashamed to say it, as it's pretty much the exact opposite stance to what I was brought up around, but other than ginormous prints, the pixels would have their uses.

The more I've been looking at the 5d3 today, the more I like it, and if it was priced the same as the D800 it'd be a close run thing.
£600 more for the 5d3 just seems like Canon has got the pricing wrong.

Not very exciting really.... and why anyone apart from professional togs would consider buying one at release at £3000 is beyond me.
When it's down to less than £2000 I could be tempted if I was looking for a new body - but released at almost £2000 more than a 7D for full-frame and marginally better AF - no thanks.

Agreed. I'll be looking at both, but the 800 has a big head start already. At the Focus show next week and hoping I'll see one or the other then.

because its part of their business and they can claim the £3000 as a loss for tax ;) i know someone who is considering buying 2 as soon as they become available..
i have to say the ISO6400 shots i've seen are very impressive, but they were under controlled lighting conditions - i've yet to see anyone with test shots showing ISO6400+ at say 2.8/1.4 1/40 they're all up in the 1/500 1/800..

agreed but i am quite impressed with the spec of the camera and some of the initial test shots.
i am planning to buy one of these this time next year when they should be near the 2k mark and with all the bugs ironed out/all the proper user reviews done on them to make a fair judgement on this camera.
Dont forget , we are literately stuck with this 5d mk3 for 4+ years at least mate. Dont expect the mk4 to come out any time soon lads. So either like it or lump it, or go nikon. simple as that.
For me, i will be coming from a 400d so i PERSONALY will see a MAJOR improvement/upgrade from my camera.
Re: The Official 5dmk3 Thread
Anyone play with the new cameras today at Focus? It was far too busy for me, so I CBA fighting to play, especially considering you weren't allowed to put CF cards in them.
Focus on a Sunday is awful, it's full of obstructive weirdos perving over the models.
I've only just picked up a D700 so it going to be a while before I can consider the new bodies anyway.

Re: The Official 5dmk3 Thread
Hmmmm, Ive always missed this show, but Sally has Tue/Wed off so fingers crossed !
Re: The Official 5dmk3 Thread
I never go, it's just a bad idea tbh. I end up thinking I need stuff that I categorically cannot afford but would find a roundabout way of justifying spending the money on anyway.
