Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
The lenses?
I'll see if I can try them locally.
It's a 3rd party battery grip, no idea why, and he just offered it with the camera.

That's the lens, he seems to think fairly highly of it. Only reason I'd consider the longer lens is whether it would be just as good as the 55mm, but with that extra zoom, thereby possibly reducing the need for a dedicated long range lens, since I won't be buying a 2nd lens for a while due to monies.

No, the camera bodies, and their methods of operation.
I don't have big hands, but I found the 450/500D to have such a cramped handgrip that it wasn't comfy. At the time I was comparing to a D60 which was better, but ultimately the most comfy was an Oly E620 - which was by far the smallest of the lot, so it's not as simple as outright size.
Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
I was about to say.
Well, I've been using my friends 450D a bit the last week, and the Nikon is slightly larger, which I will like since the 450D was a little cramped.
Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
and dont forget, as already mentioned, that the D3100 limits which lenses you can use. They must have a focus motor built in, as the 3100 body doesn't have one.
Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
Mm, not too worried about that though, since from what I've most, quite a few lenses come with in built autofocus.
For the price it just seems to be the best option for me. Just need to work out whether it's worth an extra £30 to get the 18-105 VR lens over the 18-55 kit one.
Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
Also, what bags would people recommend?
I want one that I'll be able to puit other things in aswell (such as some biking stuff such as a puncture repair kit), water, some food. Bit's a bobs. Ideally I'd like to be able to use it as a normal backpack.
Been looking at:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lowepro-Fast...ref=pd_cp_ce_0
But seems kinda pricey, any cheaper alternatives which are actually decent?
Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
That's not expensive! I know people who have spent over £400 on camera bags, and still hate them all....
I've got 4 diferen't ones and they each have flaws.
Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
Yeah that looks fine.
I've got a simple shoulder bag, but it's small enough to fit in my normal rucksack - bit of a faff if you need to suddenly hop off and take a quick shot though.
Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
Look for GEM in ebay, they sell nice rucksacks at a decent price. I have one.

I have a Fastpack 250 which I use for going abroad with as it can take my laptop and other essentials while still being on the small side. I wouldn't get it as a general camera bag, camera and lens access is pretty poor.
I also have a Billingham Hadley Pro when I am travelling light, and a Lowepro Flipside 400AW for when I am carrying loads of camera stuff and not much else up hills and mountains, both are substantially more expensive than £42.
All I can say is buy a decent bag first, if you skimp you are going to be buying another more expensive bag soon afterwards.
Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
Ok, so maybe I' completely wrong about it being pricey when compared to other camera bags :P
What would people recommend for a bag which works quite well as a general backpack aswell?
Thanks
Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
From what I've seen, a bit out of my pricerange :/
Unless you've got a link for a 2nd hand one within it?
Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
It's just a spammer, ignore it.
Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
The dodgy english did make me think it, was just hoping :P
Re: Should I buy a decent camera?
Am about to pull the trigger on a D3100 I reckon.
But just seen a Pentax K-r go for sale for around the same price, and it seems fairly similar, wondered why no one has recommended anything other than a canon/nikon?

Problem is they are both great Cameras.
I'm a Pentax user, and I think I must be a fanboy.
But I would simply recommend that you just get the one that feels best in your hands. They are both great cameras, with little between them, the K-r has slightly better image quality, faster shutter (good for sports). However, these things probably won't matter.
There is one thing I would say thou to really consider, that is that the K-r has in body image stablisation. This means that even cheap lenses are more usable in low light.
However as this is your first dSLR right? I'd say its better just to get one that has an interface which gells in your hand better.
Or just buy a k-5, because thats a bloody brilliant camera for the dosh.
