This camera has most of the features of the K5 in a lower price bracket:

It has a plastic weather sealed body an no top panel LCD like in the K5,but has a steel frame,pentaprism and weatherproofing. It can use AA batteries with an adaptor.
Given that this will be well under £500 very quickly if its replacing the K-r, nice to see proper weather sealing!

FFS,this camera is £500 to £600 camera.
I can see loads of people buying £500 to £600 cameras but not expensive lenses. Just like all the D70,D80 and D90 users who use kit lenses still.
Its this ignorance which will lead to the downfall of companies like Pentax. Advertising is one thing,but when these old wives tales are propagated like Chinese Whispers the damage done is even worse.

And lens count? I'm sorry but the 77mm Lim, or the 16-50 DA* are great examples of glass which has nothing equal on other mounts. Not to mention the whole weather sealed thing. I do recall a coworker once commenting that he'd never heard of people using pentax, showed him some work which had just been in photo a day, guy tried to defend his comments. But ultimately thats the thing, if your eye is as like kushtibari, you'll get top photos on anything you use. So try and find something that fits.
I would have thought low price, weather sealing, and the pentaprisim would have counted for something. But unless its made out of low quality plastic, breaks whilst used inside a jeep on a glacier (yes, this happened iwth a 350D, my k20d was outside where it was -10°C colder) has a logo stamped on it they like, nothing will change in their minds.
Jinkies, they don't have a high end commitment, except for their brilliant medium format stuff, the fact they spank a cannon 7D in the APC-S upper end.....Quote:

I had a Pentax Optio 450 many moons ago,and it was a fantastic camera when it came to image quality. People have seen some of the shots and were surprised it came from a 4MP compact.
I still think that my Canon S60 and S95 were not as good at base ISO. They would have been Pentax cameras if they had not left that part of the market!!:(

If they are that worried about equipment depreciation,then they should be trying to take good pictures and sell them to defer the cost of their investment.
The Pentax could depreciate worse than the Nikon but still not cost you any more. The Pentax could loss half its value and cost you £600,and the Nikon could loss only one third and still cost you the same. Yet you still need to stump up £600 more.
But,TBH I can see a good photographer doing good work easily with the Pentax setup,basically since you could have two decent lenses for the same price as the Nikon.
Alternatively,£600 would get you a top end tripod or even pay for a decent screen and calibrator,or a good printer. That would even cover a copy of Adobe CS6.

The only lenses which I see are missing are some very wide aperture lenses,ie, F1.4 ones,a telephoto over 400MM and specialist stuff like tilt-shift. However,this is not relevant to all photographers though. On top of this there are a whole load of older KAF lenses which should work and loads of independent lenses which will fill in the blanks too. The K mount has been around for decades.
However,even then for the vast majority of people,the Pentax themselves have a big enough range of lenses anyway.
So I don't understand the logic of why a K30 is not a good buy at £500 to £600 when there are enough decent lenses available for the system.

52 non-DX lenses and many of them seem to be older legacy designs from the 1980s and 1990s.
The vast majority of people will be buying the DX lenses listed,and some of the FX primes listed,ie,the 50MM and maybe the macro lenses.
Most of the FX telephotos are for pros and cost silly money(irrelevant to most dSLR owners due to cost and weight),loads of the zooms were kit lenses for 35MM film bodies(irrelevant now),many have been superceded by DX lenses and newer FX lenses(probably made to order now) and the rest are for FX bodies and some are very specialist lenses. Very few people would buy many of those lenses for DX bodies any more.
I never thought camera E-PEEN existed?
Not to mention, when a camera system dies the prices for your used equipment go UP so it costs you less to move to another system.
I've been caught by Olympus' move to micro 4/3rds, so my E620 was the second to last camera in the old 4/3rds format. End result is if I want to move systems I can sell my gear for more than I paid for it new! I'm not wanting for any more kit either - I think people buying lenses on the off chance they will move to full frame in the future are compromising themselves both now and for when they move.
I agree kalniel and TheAnimus and TBH when you buy a camera,who should go with what suits you the best and try to get the best out of it.

I still don't get what a £500 to £600 cameras has to do with a D700 or D800,when most people who would buy a D90 or D5100 wouldn't even think of such a camera.
On top of this,I still don't understand why people on forums can't realise that the vast majority of dSLR sales are to Joe and Jane Bloggs,are under £700 and people are not likely to be buying many lenses anyway.
Most will keep the kit lenses,or buy Sigma or Tamron lenses since they are cheaper and if they upgrade they will need to ditch what they have anyway especially due to product segmentation.
How many of them will still use jpegs or own something like Photoshop CS4,CS5 or CS6??
The most common lenses I can see are:
1.)Std kit wide angle zoom - cheap(APS-C)
2.)Std kit telephoto zoom - cheap(APS-C)
3.)Superzoom -more expensive(APS-C)
4.)50MM lens - cheap(35MM)
5.)Maybe a Macro - more expensive(APS-C or 35MM)
This is hardly an investment in lenses,as the first three are very common,and why even cameras upto D7000 level have kits with superzooms. Even the auto all singing,all dancing modes exist for ease of use too.
Even video modes and live view existed for people moving up from compacts,not advanced amateurs and pros. Most of them hated it with a passion when these were first released.
Most buyers won't care about 35MM lenses anymore,let alone be bothered to know. Maybe the alternate attitude is a holdover from the film days with some people. With lower segmentation,it made sense - get a cheaper body and spend more on the lens. You could then upgrade the body and keep the lens for ages.
However,this is not the case anymore.
So,I don't understand why anyone would think buying an SLR outside of a Nikon or Canon is a bad idea,if the product is good?
Brand snobbery rules a lot of people.
I was out the other day taking some pics when I went past a couple of guys set up with bottom end Canon kit and a couple of cheap tripods. They looked at the top of my camera as I went past, saw the Pentax logo and bloody nearly sneered. I had the DA*60-250 attached which is an absolute belter of a lens and it was on a Gitzo tripod and Kirk ballhead. All they saw was the Pentax name and they just dismissed it. I joined a photography club this year and most members did the same when they saw I used Pentax. Didn't matter that the picture that won best image of the year was taken by my old K-x.
I read all the reviews before going Pentax with the K-x. I've no regrets at all. They are perfect for my needs. Maybe if I wanted to print huge or needed better autofocus for sports it might be different. I think the K-30 has a lot going for it. If thats the K-r replacement I can't wait to see what the K-5 replacement is.

I think in many cases camera snobbery is even worse than Intel/AMD/Nvidia fanboism. If the FX8150 had been as fast or faster than a Core i5 for gaming and cheaper,I suspect many people would have gone out and bought one instead of a Core i5. Nobody would care if AMD was smaller than Intel or was less profitable.
