Camera Shopping... For a friend, on a tight budget.

So I've been given a budget of £250, they want a DSLR body and non-prime lens to get started.

They live out in Vietnam, so it will need to be robust, I am scared by canon, because I've seen so many dead ones on my travels, never a dead Nikon or Pentax or Sony.

But my budget is a big problem, I don't think I'll be able to find a WR lens in that range, let alone a body.

I was thinking of including a lot of big silica gel sachets and a airtight bag.

    Any ideas / suggetions?

I think for that kind of extremely low budget, the only dSLRs you will realistically get will be off the Canon refurb shop.

    Edit!!

What about a dSLR style body like this Panasonic G3:

    It is £300 after cashback.

Re: Camera Shopping... For a friend, on a tight budget.

There were a whole load of deals on the D3000 until around a month ago,and you could get one for around £270.

    Edit!!!

    What about this:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nikon-D310...item231c5a6d72

New 18-55MM lenses go for around £50 to £60 on Ebay.

TBH,50MM AF primes will be easily over this for any camera system,if you want a new one.

You could try going for secondhand lenses, although of course there is no warranty on these.

Oh should have mentioned. I'm looking second hand!

The budget is tight, really tight, so I lost a K-r with two kit lenses, it went for £256

if you are going for any professional shooting and want you pick up shooting skills, fujifilm s3 pro + nikkor 18-70mm is all you need. You can find it on ebay for around £100-150 for the body and another £100 for the lens.
If you need a compact dslr which does basic point and shoot, go for nikon d3000/d3100 or cannon 450d-550d + 18-55mm vr/is.

It's as if you didn't read my post at all....

Bob thanks for the offer, but given the money for the person involved, I'm thinking Sony/Pentax, get some IS in the body, and a more modern sensor for low light.

Second hand Olympus E1 and sealed lens? Might be more rugged than he needs. Low MP count shouldn't really put him off but depends if he's susceptible to pixel envy

Get a canon 1000D with the bundled 18-55mm lens.

I'm probably going to keep away from that, because the low end canons quite simply have awful build quality, and as this one is going to be living in a farm in Vietnam, I doubt it would survive.
