Action cameras (GoPro or not to GoPro)
So, the wife an I have decided we have a few good uses for an action cam. I know the GoPro would do what we (and by that, I really mean I) would want, but I don't want to just go and get one of them without looking at the alternatives.
Something that can be paired with an Android handset would be ideal, we don't have any iDevices (other than iPod Classics).
What's out there?

GoPro is the best in the market, but since you want to check out the alernatives. Take a look at their competitor http://contour.com/
Their cameras are slighter bigger i think.
By the way are you looking for HD, or SD cameras? Because most of the alternatives aren't HD :(
Re: Action cameras (GoPro or not to GoPro)
The WiFi backpack of the GoPro works with Andriod.
The other thing is there are approximately 5 billion accessories for the go pro. Need a new headstrap and your passing Suvarnabhumi airport, no probs, they'll have one.

Look at Sony - just releasing two new action cams. Can't find the link, but saw it this week. Better slo-mo, iirc, than GoPro.

Aside from GoPro and Contour, there is also Drift Innovation to consider.
Re: Action cameras (GoPro or not to GoPro)
I'd recommend a GoPro. Got one myself. Very good bit of kit, and they seem to have the most accessories and support out there.
Fairly robust as well.
If you can get one from the States as they're a fair bit cheaper, but officially GoPro won't support grey imports so you'd have to take your chances.
Re: Action cameras (GoPro or not to GoPro)
Got mine in Hong Kong, absolute bargin cost just over £100.
Have driven thousand miles through the desert heat with it, have strapped it to a plane, have cycled with it down vietnamese mountain roads...
Still I have to say the user interface is a turd, simple things like one of my memory cards likes to get slide to write protect. Does the Go Pro tell you theres an error when you push record, well yes actually it does but so badly I never realise...
Re: Action cameras (GoPro or not to GoPro)
Yep, not had mine that long, but I'd agree with TheAnimus's comments on them. Trying to figure out which symbol the screen is displaying, or how many LED blinks it's given out can be massively frustrated. But you pick it up pretty quickly, and the results are stunning.
Had it strapped to the car doing a time lapse between here and Germany, several track days, and at some point it'll be doing a driftday.
Re: Action cameras (GoPro or not to GoPro)
GoPro it is then.
An just to clear up the misunderstanding rox0r, we were actually thinking of mounting it inside the car, so we can get some footage of our one year old dancing in his car seat when we put a CD on.
I want to get into the habit of having it recording on days out so we can see the kids changing over time and catch some of the things they do in the car which make us laugh etc.
:)
Re: Action cameras (GoPro or not to GoPro)
see this is the thing, the gopro sucker mount is perfect for that!
I'll (hopefully) be using mine in a fortnight to film my 91 year old Grandmother flying around Cornwall!

That sure is a good idea. They grow up so fast, and sometimes you forget the cute moments like those. :)
Re: Action cameras (GoPro or not to GoPro)
GoPro is an excellent bit of kit. Used it several times on cars. It has a pretty wide angle lens and the colour reproduction is on the warm side, but the latter shouldn't worry you. It does suffer from "shutter roller(?)" so if it's a bumpy car ride, you'll need to stabilise that out.
Re: Action cameras (GoPro or not to GoPro)
Been thinking about getting some kind of action cam. Settled on the GoPro really (will be a save up job!), I think TA comment about loads of accessories for it was the decider. While the design of the Contour is better IMO, I think feature and ability wise the GoPro seems better. Plus I just saw this video
