Depends what your protecting against, I have a very scratched up with sticky crud filter from time spent in polluted 3rd world areas. It really does protect the lens and its coating!

I use protective filters for when I am photographing by the sea.. all that salt spray and sand is no good for nice glass. Would be silly not to protect in thos situations if you ask me.
