    UV Filters

It's a contentious issue I know, but for xmas I've got a loverly 77m f1.8 lim, but I really will need to use protection before I'm back in Thailand / Cambodia.

As it stands most of the 49mm filters I see are just standard Hoya, which tbh I've not been best impressed with in the past. At the moment I've got a great Hoya Digital Pro on my wide angle, and a good B+W.

No one appears to have them in stock in London! So I was woundering, do you guys have any suggestions? I could try and go mail order, but I'm worried about time. I leave soon after xmas.

Try Tom or Adam at the London Camera Exchange, Leamington Spa. Legends through and through.

Their website doesn't list anything for 49mm. Also I'm in London, not Leamington Spa I could go mail order I suppose, I just worry after bad experiances last year with couriers and posties the week before xmas.

    Re: UV Filters

They ordered in the filters for me in a day or two - I'm sure they would post but might be costly for guaranteed delivery.

In London have you tried the place on Wells Street W1 - Camera World or something like that?

    Re: UV Filters

Cameraworld have a Hoya PRO 1, which is the best of the filters so far. I would prefer an HD or a B+W as they generally have much better reviews!

For those not on the pentax scene, the 77mm is a classic, its a very good lens, but suffers from CA, so I want to make sure I don't exhasibate anything with the filter.

    Re: UV Filters

A PRO 1 will do fine, just take it off for any critical shots, so you still have protection most of the time.

Yeah its just with filters in the past for the sake of £10 difference I buy the more expensive. This was after wasting £70 on two crap CPLs (one cost £25 the other £45) Played with a B+W and realise it was a differen't league, and that £110 was the right amount to spend.

The 77mm has wounderful bokeh, works great in contralight, but you have to watch the edges. As I'll be in Vietnam for tet hopefully, a good filter is pretty much needed. I don't want to spend £35 on something I flog on ebay later.

    Re: UV Filters

    This will arrive before christmas:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Coated-Clear.../dp/B004OR15K4

Should be better than a UV filter. Though you can get the UV version cheaper - http://www.amazon.co.uk/49mm-010M-Na...ref=pd_cp_ph_0 I would go for clear over UV if you want best quality.

Hmm think I'm going for the B+W, it was such a nice lens, not bought in the UK (friend of mine was visiting Lodon), but in the UK I would be spending like 5% of the lens value on the filter. I don't mind stumping up the dosh.

Thanks eltel, but I think I'll use amazon, just because I'm prime. But I might drop in there next time I'm down at my grandmothers.

Already prime, you've no idea how many £'s of technical books amazon have had from me. Gotta say I love same day delivery too.

If it makes you feel less envious, I'm not getting any time to play with them at the moment It makes me feel sad, some of them (my 150-500mm for instnace) were bought more because I was working so much, I wasn't having time to spend on hobbies, but could make myself happy buying something for the promise of a hobby.

Well not this year, 7 days in Chiang Mai, might go up to Pai. Going to take my K-5, 77mm lim, 16-500mm f2.8 (and B+W CPL), sigma 4.5mm fish eye. Then I wonder what I'll bring for shooting Tet (Vietnamese New Year). Oh, and of course the little Q.

Really tempted to take the 150-500mm, but know its pointless to, too heavy for my carbon fibre tripod you see.

yup, got to love the 16-500

The sigma is a bloody beast, at 1.8kgs..... Any shake of any kind is so damned noticable at 500mm. The OS 1 or 2, or Body just aren't enough, it makes kinematic exercises fun by comparison.
