    New Canon 6D Announced

    So, Canon's response to the D600 ?

    The Canon 6D

To sit between the 60D and the 7D it has a full frame 20M sensor, ISO 100-25600, 1080 video, built-in GPS for geotagging, built-in Wi-Fi for control by PC/smartphone, and an initial retail price of...... £1,799

    Hands-on here

    Re: New Canon 6D Announced

Like the D600 it is limited to a top shutter speed of 1/4000,has an even lower flash synchronisation speed of 1/180 too. The AF has 11 points which is less than that of the Nikon D600 too and also only has a single SD card slot. IMHO,both cameras seem to be more suited towards architectural and landscape work.

heard people are considering ditching and moving to Canon (5D3) because of this release - they've been waiting and waiting for the 700 successor, only to be fed that!

Its worse than the Nikon D600. Lower flash sync speed, use of a single card slot, less AF points and even lower continuous drive speed. The £150 difference is nothing.

The 5D MK3 is around £2600 to £2700. I would assume that extra £800 to £900 would be made back very quickly if you are good enough, and the 5D has a higher resale value I suspect too.

    Re: New Canon 6D Announced

Surely these cameras are both just full-frame DSLR systems for HD video at a cheaper cost than the 5DMk3 etc dropping some advanced features as AF points, flash sync speed, and continuous drive speed are irrelevant in video.

The WiFi (built-in on the Canon £50 on the Nikon) is a clue too, allowing you to do live-view on a 9in tablet device for scene composition and focusing to save having to buy/hire a lilliput.

Noting that they have a 35mm sensor I would have to agree.

Nice, but if it really is a "consumer" FF camera, I would have liked it to have included a built in flash. I mean what's the point of reducing its size if you're going to walk around with a big flash unit sitting on top of it.

I don't get it? Canon 6D comes with a built-in flash according to Canon website.

It doesn't, and I can't see anything on the Canon website that is wrong either. Have you got a link? Could be that there is a page with a mistake that needs correcting

How will that effect people who want to use the camera as a master controler with no flash? On the 60D it used the pop flash to send a signal?

I suppose on a £1800 camera, its hard to find the budget for the cheap as chips, emergency back up, pop flash.

Pop flash isn't ideal in a studio situation, cable or third-party trigger systems tend to be used instead. Outside of studio you use a flashgun rather than pop-up anyway.

I guess your back up is your other camera.

    Re: New Canon 6D Announced

Is this really aimed at studios thou?

I guess I'm confused in a way as to where their target is. I quite like the idea of the WiFi interface, but only if they open up the API, if they don't, they are missing a trick, you could have some really gnarly addons, features and even mechanical extra bits if they allowed that. That would be a real interest to the hacker community.

However, I think we are seeing something a bit gimmiky. They've missed out things that many photographers would like (such as sync speed), if you want to do something wireless, well better head off to ebay, nothing out of the box. If your the kind of buyer who has £1.8k to spare, plus enough for a flash gun as a starter set, you've probably got the dosh for the 5DmkIII.

This is why I don't get what it is for? I see its main USP is the WiFi thing, which tbh could open it up for a world of applications where cables are tricky. I could see people using this for ariel photography for that reason alone.

    But these are really neiche.

So my question really is, who are they aiming for?
