Around half of that figure was under a retention of title agreement - so it was reclaimed pretty much straight away. Yes, the other half is rather painful, but Canon/Nikon/Sony know that hands on experience is key to increasing their market share, so I'd be surprised if they don't continue supporting the chain. That said, Jessops may have to pay a higher price for each unit/lower supply quantity etc. There are a fair few ways the manufacturer can gain protection.
The other thing is the loss comprises two parts, the actual economic loss of the materials that went into the particular device supplied (Bill of Materials cost), and the opportunity cost loss of the profit in each device. Not ideal, but the actual exposure (versus damage to expected profits) is lower than those figures probably make out.
